Which Team Sucks The Most At Taking The Ball Away?

In the Romo snubbing thread I started looking to Pig Pen's defensive support over his entire career basically.

Nothing shocking in that I knew they were good. But I didn't realize how good the Pittsburgh defense has been.

In Ben's 8 years, the worst defense he has had to play with ranks 12 in scoring. Next worse is 11.

For the other 6 years of his career, his defense has been top 3 in scoring and for 4 of those years they have been the best scoring defense in the NFL.

But this thread isn't about that. This thread is about takeaways which is something else I looked at in regards to Ben's defense. For his first 7 years, the defense took the ball away 10th most in the NFL over that span. Last year they were awful. Worst in the league with 15 takeaways. That's almost half of what they had averaged over the 7 previous years.

So over the last 8 years which team has sucked the most at it?

Drumroll, and a warm heartfelt congratulations to:

The Washington Commanders

Congratulations DC. Your supreme ineptitude at generating turnovers has earned you a big old..........

Took the liberty of highlighting Dallas, New York and Philly. Thought about highlighting Washington too but they've already got so much red that they're going to stick out anyway.

Of note. Since Dom Capers took over in Green Bay as the DC, they've blown the doors off the league in terms of taking the ball away.

2009 - 2011 Packers: 110 takeaways

That's 10 more than the #2 team and 30 more than the league average for that span, IIRC.

Good stuff Hoofbite. I believe takeaways and defensive scoring (TDs scored by the defense) are key to winning in in big games. That's why I have always advocated an aggressive defense rather than the "bend-but-don't-break" style that we have had here for a long time.

Wade was supposed to change all that but it didn't manifest here, although he sure did it in Houston this season as they increased by 9 from last to 2 over the average. I have to believe this is somehow due to Jerry Jones. You can't have that many DCs and still have the same style/problem. We actually went DOWN by 5 this year with Remus as the DC!

Again, Ryan was SUPPOSED to bring in an aggressive style that would generate turnovers but it hasn't happened.

Getting rid of Dave Campo is a big step in the right direction but we still need to improve our DBs this off-season in a big way as well as our pass-rush. The fact that "The Poodle" was brought back at all tells me that Jerry LIKES that style of passive defense.

Yet, more playoff appearances. Possibly wins too.

You never know in todays NFL.

Those rankings are very telling. We're sitting there at 23 while the Giants and Eagles are way up the ladder at 7 and 10 respectively. Want to know why we haven't had consistent success against those two? There you go. Our defense just doesn't measure up.

Interesting about the bengals, considering who their DC is.

I always felt like zimmer got a bad rap around here.

I dunno. He's only been with them since 2008.

Their numbers aren't really that great since he's been there.

Heavily influenced by the 4 years prior.

I should have looked closer.

It's sad that it takes this long for people to realize what an abomination our entire D is.

But they had 4 good games at the end of 2009. Clearly that erases what happened in the other 6 full years, right?

You've had more playoff appearances and wins than the Cowboys in the last 8 years? I seriously doubt that. In the last 8 years you have been dead last in the NFC East 6 times and 4 seasons in a row. The other 2 seasons you do have playoff appearances (2005 & 2007), but that makes only 2. We have 3 in the last 8 years (2006, 2007, & 2009).

There is no way with 6 last place finishes that you have more wins than we do in that time frame, because we have no last place finishes and 2007 and 2009 alone would give us more wins.

2004...dead even
2005...Dallas -1 (Washington +1)
2006...Dallas +4 (Dallas +3)
2007...Dallas +4 (Dallas +8)
2008...Dallas +1 (Dallas +9)
2009...Dallas +7 (Dallas +16)
2010...dead even
2011...Dallas +3 (Dallas +19)

Thus we have a complete season advantage in wins over the last 8 years.

You didn't have to do any of that lol...just show that over the last 8 years Dallas went to the playoffs three times while the Skins went to the playoffs two times. And I think the "wins" part was about playoff wins. But both teams won 1 playoff game over that time span as well, so that wouldn't hold up, either.

And for the record, Dallas was +3 in 2011, not +1 ;)...and they were +4 in 2006, not +3 lol...

Thank you, corrected.
