1) We should have extended Tank this summer because if he has another great year we will have to pay more

OR

2) We should wait until 2019 to extend him and pay him more for proving he deserves it

Are you a pay now guy and move on, or wait for proof then pay later.

I suppose it doesn't matter because we've taken the pay latter approach. Just curious about the fandom thoughts on this one and I'm bored

I'm going with option 2. But I think I would have been OK with either decision to be honest.

With option 2, the team also buys themselves another year to see what else they have at the position. If guys like Charlton, Gregory, Ealy, and Armstrong come through as they hope, they might be in position to not pay Lawrence next year and just take the comp pick when someone else backs up the money truck.

I'm thinking that will be the team position on Irving (without the money truck) but this team tends to pay it's top players and Tank appears to be one of them. Show me again Tanko, Come get your money

Irving is finished in Dallas. Even if he makes it this year, I think it will be his last.

Pay them when they’ve showed they deserve the money
Dlaw had a great season and when availible he has played well
He needs to prove he can stay availible and be the beast we need
Then his riches will come

2) and hope Charleton and Gregory come on and Tapper or Strong makes a case for the rotation and they can let Lawrence go get his money elsewhere. Don't need a DE making that kind of money with a highly paid OL.

More specifically, pay a player for what he WILL do. Not what he already did. If you don't think they can keep doing it, let somebody else make that mistake.

Prove it deal - both on and off the field.

I don't even discuss contracts until the old one expires or close to expiring on any player.

Option 2 for me. No brainer for me on this one. Guys that have one great season and health issues scare me. If he can stay healthy and produce another year then we'll talk long term. Or possibly trade bait.

No brainer.....#2. Hopefully, Gregory and/or Taco make him and his cap hit expendable. I like Lawrence but he will command a lot of $$$$ with only one great season under his belt.

Pay later. I'm not sure if the light went on or what, but the dude didn't even look like the same player this past year. He was taking over games at times. I want to see it one more time.

Cowboys got it right this time. I like Tank but he has ONE proven, complete season. If they had given him a big long term deal, to me it would feel like the way contracts were done 5-10 years ago. This is the right move. Let’s reassess after this season. If he’s had another healthy, double digit sack season, we can reassess next offseason.

You always want your core guys to believe they are getting paid right. Often when you pay a guy too early, by the end of the contract they are feeling underappreciated. Never be timid about paying a guy more when he has earned it.

3) Let him play for a bit and then if he continues to play at a high level, extend him during this season.
