Most of our dishonorees here at WOW are sports’ equivalent of working stiffs who find themselves whining against the vicissitudes of fate. Given their privileged positions, we show them no sympathy. But we recognize that their whining isn’t any different than our own rants against life’s frustrations great and small.
But our favorite whiners — in the sense that they’re the ones we love most to revile — are the guys in charge who complain about the hired help. If you own the organization, you’ve got no business whining about the people underneath you. If they fail to meet your expectations, the fault is yours for hiring them.
That’s how Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones comes to be our choice for Whiner of the Week. He hired his staff, including coach Wade Phillips. He has ignored many suggestions that he should hire different people, people who win ballgames in December and January, when they count the most.
And now he’s whining about the people he refuses to admit aren’t getting the job done.
Jones is particularly ticked about all the leaked stories about squabbles on the team. And he’s really upset anytime someone writes that there are people in the organization that don’t want Terrell Owens around — if you can imagine that.
So Jones has slapped a gag order not just on his assistant coaches and office staff, which other teams do, he’s also told Phillips to zip it. This means that the head coach couldn’t even comment on players he watched at the scouting combine.
The reason for the gag, Jones said, is because there have been false reports about the team. The reason we know they’re false is because Jones says they are, and we all know he would never try to spin a story to favor himself.
"The way to clear that (problem) up, because I'm the one who knows, is we get together and we all say it, so everybody hears it, at the same time. So we can find a way to cut back on some of this misinformation,” Jones told reporters.
So from now on, all misinformation comes from Jones. In his eyes, the problem is now solved.
