Going into the offseason the future looked very bleak at the CB position. Coming off an ACL tear and going into the last year of his contract, Cowboys fans haven't been expecting to see Claiborne around for much longer. Given the price tag, most Cowboy fans werent expecting Carr to even be on the team in 2015. While Carr remains a Cowboy and Claiborne has been participating in preseason for the first time in hjs career, the current prospects of the CB position look much better then they did in March. However in all likelihood hood both players will be playing elsewhere in 2016.
To improve their long term outlook, Dallas drafted Byron Jones in the first round, and so far that pick looks like it will pay handsome dividends in the future. Its likley that in Jones the Cowboys have their 2016 #2 CB and 2017 #1. Also remaining in the fold is the steady Orlando Scandrick who is likley to be the Cowboys #1 CB over the next two years. None of that is set however, but seems rational
After the Jones pick, Dallas still had significant concers at the CB position. I recall may posters belive it would be a good idea to double fist CBs in this draft. All Dallas had was former Saints cast of Cory White, and Tyler Patmon an intriguing but slight former UDFA.
Over the corse of training camp, both White and Patmon have looked up to task. Patmon can in camp much larger and developed and has gone to war with good success against Dallas's WR's. A cerebral and physical player, Patmon is perfect for a cover 2 coverage scheme and is talented enough to play man coverage as well. He has looked the part of a player who could play well this year if he was put into a Nickle or Dime role.
White has looked like a complete different player then the guy who was benched in Nola last year. From the looks of it so far, he looks like the victim of Rob Ryans defense that puts alot of stress on CB's. So far in camp he looks like he is going to have a major role in the defence as the secondary 's Swiss Army Knife. And given that he could wind up covering TE's in Dime, he could be an unsung reason for improvement in the secondary. Like Patmon he is playing like a guy that could effectivly play a Nicke or Dime role this season if needed. A long defender, he also fits the MO of what Dallas wants at the position.
I wouldn't go so far as to say CB won't be a postion we need to worry about. TC and preseason are one thing, real games are another. What I will say is the success or failure of White and Patmon will go a long way towards haveing great depth at CB in the future or being very thin and needing to use more assets at the position. I have a good feeling about the former
