I like Xavier Woods long term, but not sure if he'll be ready to start next year or just, better than Heath. Depending on is development, I can see us not taking a safety, guess it depends on how the board falls. I'd definitely take a speed WR to take the top of opposing defenses, a guard to eventually replace Cooper and a 1 tech DT.

Van Smith, S, Clemson
Height: 5-11. Weight: 195.
Projected 40 Time: 4.60.
Projected Round (2018): 2-4.
10/14/17: Smith injured his knee in the season opener against Kent State, and that caused him to miss Week 2. He has come back to the field and has 12 tackles on the season.

7/24/17: Smith was the best safety for Clemson in 2016 as the program had to replace both of its starting safeties from the 2015 season. He totaled 96 tackles with 5.5 for a loss, two passes broken up and two interceptions. Smith could be even better in 2017 now that he has a year of experience.

Damon Webb, S, Ohio State
Height: 5-11. Weight: 195.
Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
Projected Round (2018): 3-4.
10/14/17: Webb has 29 tackles with two interceptions thus far this year.

7/24/17: Webb broke into the starting lineup for Ohio State in 2016 and had a solid season as the strong safety next to Malik Hooker. Webb totaled 57 tackles with three passes broken up and one interception on the season. It will be interesting to see if Webb can show the versatility to play free safety with Hooker in the NFL.

Donnie Miles, S, North Carolina
Height: 5-11. Weight: 210.
Projected 40 Time: 4.62.
Projected Round (2018): 3-4.
10/14/17: Miles has 37 tackles and an interception to start the season.

7/24/17: Miles notched 102 tackles and two passes broken up on the season in 2016. He put together a huge 2015 season for the Tar Heels in terms of run defense and was one of their best players. Miles totaled 128 tackles on the season, but had zero interceptions and two passes broken up. He notched one breakup, zero picks and 53 tackles as a freshman.

ole Reyes, S, North Dakota
Height: 6-2. Weight: 215.
Projected 40 Time: 4.54.
Projected Round (2017): 3-5.
10/14/17: Reyes has 25 tackles thus far this year.

7/24/17: Scouting sources say that Reyes is on their watch lists for the 2018 NFL Draft. He is said to have received a 5.7 grade from National, and that translates to an estimation of a high fourth-round grade heading into his senior year. 2016 was a productive season for Reyes and the Fighting Hawks. He totaled three interceptions, two forced fumbles, eight passes broken up, 1.5 sacks, 6.5 tackles for a loss and 70 tackles on the year. Reyes is said to have a starter's combination of size and speed for a NFL safety.

rey Marshall, S, Florida State
Height: 6-0. Weight: 210.
Projected 40 Time: 4.58.
Projected Round (2018): 4-6.
10/14/17: Marshall has 14 tackles with one for a loss on the year.

7/24/17: In 2016, Marshall totaled 58 tackles with four passes broken up and zero interceptions. He had 21 tackle as a sophomore and 12 as a freshman backup. Marshall has the skill set to produce more

Yes he has athletic ability obviously but he doesn't have football instincts

He's football instincts, which is why he's so good in man coverage. He's not a ball-hawk, and I don't blame folks for wanting one. But they're a rarity and Byron is far from weak link.

I think Cooper may actually be okay. Regardless I would put ballhawking S, speedy WR, and LB above OG right now. We may need another CB too.

Safety is not a top priority for me,I really hope the Cowboys now understand the value of a DT who can push the pocket and also kill the run game.WR and LB are also on top of the list. The loss of one LB should not derail the whole defense.

I agree but don't think they do

I'm with you.

More studs on the DL, and LB are the top Priorities.

A 2 footed JAylon would change all of this.

Im worried about Tyron Smith too. If a stud offensive tackle falls in our lap I hope we draft him.

We really need to see Chidobe Awuzie play. The team needs to determine if he's a CB or a S (or anything at all). With Brown and Lewis, wouldn't surprise me if the team plays Awuzie like Darren Woodson, where he's a S and also has slot capabilities. Woods has looks good to me also. Around the ball a lot. Could put it together in a year. I really don't think the position is as dire as the OP believes.

That said, Minkah Fitzpatrick of Alabama would be a dynamic addition if he declares. A S with CB skills. Basically like a big version of Honey Badger. Has 9 INTs thru almost 3 years and has returned 4 for TDs. If we finish in the 12-15 range, that's where I think he goes. I think we squeeze into the playoffs though ultimately and who knows from there. It feels like we could peak at the right time this year and get a Zeke back with very fresh legs.

Armani Watts at Texas A&M is a genuine playmaker but he misses a lot of basic wrap up tackles. Seems like guys slip through his arms a bunch. Guesses a lot too. He's like a Safety version of Dez. Super highlight tape and love the desire but watch the full games and he doesn't have a complete game. We could do a lot worse and if his tackling can be fixed he could be a difference maker.

Interested to see how Jerome Baker of Ohio State tests. Plays OLB but listed at 6'1" and 225. Could be a high level box S candidate for some teams if he can run sub 4.6. Not really how we use our SS but I wish we did. Would be a Polumalu type. He's a Jr.

The Safety I want us to draft -- Siran Neal of Jacksonville St.
Aggressive, decisive hitter with man cover ability. Really shadows his man. Has also played CB and LB. Goes 6'1" and 205. This is not the type we usually go for. He's the type Seattle or Pittsburgh drafts. He's a bit of a man against boys at the FCS level so he's a guy to watch at the all-star games. Potential round 3 or early day 3 range...

Seems to have the right mindset too...
