For the future health of this team, we have to address the OL...Justice is a guy who has talent, experience, and can get the job done at more than 1 position along the OL. The sooner we start building our OL, the sooner I'll actually believe we look like a serious contender.

That said, I wouldn't be unhappy with either of the WRs and taking a lineman in round 2.

I do not support taking another defensive player in round 1.

So does that mean you stop supporting the cowboys WHEN they draft a defensive player in round 1?

Closing your mind off to any possibility is a recipe for disaster. You don't go into a draft thinking, "I'm only gonna draft an offensive player in the first round". That would be dumb.

IF and I do mean a big IF Winston Justice falls, then undoubtably I think he should be the pick. No, I don't think he falls though.

Kamerion Wimbley Height: 6-3 7/8 | Weight: 248 | 40-Time: 4.61

Strengths:
Tremendous natural athlete...Fast and very quick with a burst...Can wreak havoc rushing the passer off the edge...Does an excellent job in pursuit and can close on the ball...Changes directions well...Very productive and stood out on a talented defense...Team player with top intangibles...Is also an excellent special teams prospect...Still has a lot of upside and hasn't reached his full potential.

Weaknesses:
Undersized and lacks bulk...Needs to hit the weight room and get stronger...May have to change positions at the next level...Does not hold up at the point of attack...A liability against the run...Struggles to shed blockers...Is basically a one trick pony who relies solely on his speed...Needs to work on technique and make better use of his hands...Might only be a situational player in the pro ranks.

Notes:
Could be a 3-4 outside linebacker...Entered college at only 210 lbs so he has done a good job of adding weight and has the frame to get bigger still...A classic 'tweener who a team will need to find the right role for...At the very least he should excel as a situational pass rusher and he could easily be a lot more.

I'll pass on him at #18.

You do realize that the "liability against the run..." type comments were projecting him as a DE. Compared to other DEs he may be a liability but compared to OLBs, he'd be considered at least average or above.

Theoretically.

I think Wimbley will be better vs the run then Lawson though.

Based purely on upside I went with Lawson. I know this might sound crazy (and probably is) but if we moved back/ trade down I would take Carpenter because I believe he is more of a safe pick and a sure bet. But I don't think Lawson would last much further than 18 and he will be drafted on potential and upside higher than he probably should be. In my thinking I would take the guy with the higher ceiling, although he is not that sure fire player with 18 VS the guy who is what he is a good player, but maybe never a superstar.

Tough choice between Lawson and Justice .
I choose Lawson because I think we are one great pass ruchinf OLB from becoming a dominatine Defense

Justice will 1) not fall
2) not be selected by the Cowboys as we need a greater impact starter, Tackles tend to need time to develop.

I would be happy with most possibilities mentioned - but currently swaying with Lawson or Carpenter

I disagree.... Justice could have a very big impact right away at RT. Most scouts believe he has the skill and athleticism to move to LT eventually, but since we have Flo for the time being it wouldn't be necessary this year.... i think Justice COULD play RT very well in his rookie year.... I know he would be behinf Fabini, but he's a heck of a lot better second option than we have at the T spots.... we need to get on building a stong OL NOW.

I also highly doubt he's there at 18, but if he was i'd take him in a second.

I don't mind Lawson either... he wouldbe my second pick.... OLB is definately a big need, and Lawson has a lot of potential.... more than Wimbley IMO because of Wimbley's lack of skill in the running game..... (but to be honest i have not really seen Wimbley play much that i can remember.) Lawson seems like a better fit if moving to OLB in a 3-4.

After that i say Carpenter is a safer pick..... he's talented and i like his intelligance and work ethic... he might not be a pro bowl player, but i thik he would be a solid starter and a guy who is not going to hurt you. He can rush the passer fairly well and is solid versus the run and covering the TE..... which is what we need to complment Ware.

This years pre-draft hype of Manny Lawson on this board is very interesting to say the least.

After all the college bowl games were completed there is probably only a handful of guys on this board who would have taken Lawson at #18. And he certainly wouldnt be thought of in the same category of Wimbley, Greenway, or Ernie Simms. He just isnt the football player at THIS POINT that they are.

Fast forward a few months and he is now the favorite player on this board. A few things happend to cause this. First he works out like a track star so his on field play is suddenly looked at through a different lens.

The other thing and most interesting thing that happend with this guy, on this board, is the superstar by osmosis syndrome. You get the few people who have actually seen him play pimping him and then the 90% on this board who havent, suddenly have there darling linebacker. This board is more intelligent than most but it still has TONS of people who lets the one paragraph write up's in draft mags shape there opinion along with the majority on a forum like this.

I just encourage fellow fans to think for themselves and dont take the "well hes mentioned so much and hes really fast so thats who we need" approach to who your prefered player is.

Now there are alot of posters on this forum who watch the college games are intelligent and opinions are highly respected. Then there are those who are not. Both groups know who you are.

I have a hard time choosing between Lawson and Carpenter. I can convince myself to go either way.

But I would take one of them out of this list.

No disprespect to anyone, but I think most of the people that really want him are the ignorant members (again, no disrespect) that don't really understand what type of player we need at the SOLB spot. They're only envisioning a potentially unstopable pass rush without understanding the job requirement of a Strong side Linebacker.

The WOLB and SOLB positions are not the same and they are not interchangeable.

Again, I still wouldn't mind if we took him. But it would take more time converting him to a SOLB then it took Ware to convert to WOLB last year, and he still would probably never be as good as Carpenter at that position.

If we needed a WOLB Lawson would be #1 on my list.
well said and agreed.

My order would be:

Justice
Wimbley
Lawson
Carpenter
Jackson
Holmes

Agree with this, again as someone already stated, Wimbley being a liability against the run is from the DE position. Because he is undersized to play there, which is why hes going to be a OLB at the pro level. He will still have to take on the big boys on the line from time to time, but he would be a perfect fit for us...
If justice somehow fell to 18 (miracle) we had better sprint up to the podium with his name....

I got to go with Carpenter. He's really the last thing we need to round out our defense. You can still get a quality OT in the 2nd round or even 3rd. As for FS, it moved back a little on the importance list with the signing of Coleman, but we still need to bring in a young blood to heat up the competition!!

BP thinks coverage skills are very important as well. That is another reason that Lawson has an edge on Wimberly. Add to that Lawson has more speed.
BUT Lawson PLAYED at about 225; he has not played at his combine weight of 248. And that weight is still about 10 lbs then BP would want him to be at.
So you have to look at Lawson playing and add 30+ lbs. THAT is a lot.
Wimberly is a little slow and nothing can be done about that. Carpenter is the finished product and probably does not have a lot of growth left in him.
So all 3 have warts. If you put a gun to my head and said pick now I would have to go with Lawson by a hair.

His name is Wimbley isn't it? And I don't know where you get the idea he is slow. He may not be as fast as Lawson, ut that is wy Lawson is cosidered a freak isn't it? Because of his speed.
