I'm a huge Doug Free fan.

I wanted him in the draft bad.

He was considered a 2-3 at worst.

Only reason he slid to 4 was that foot injury that lingered his entire Senior year.

In my mind he and Joe Staley were very similar and Staley went bottom of one to the Niners.

Someone had to be doing the blocking for Michael Turner, Garrett Wolfe and Sam Hurd.

These reports sometimes crack me up....

He was the MAC's best Run blocker...then, further down, run blocking was listed as a negative.... Was the MAC just terrible for run blockers or something?

Sometimes it comes down to not what they necessarily did in college but what they have been taught in the Pro's....did their coach in the pros change them? Did they change the players philosophy....what he's always known and now has to get up to speed with what the coaches want him to do?

I just hope he does well.

Sometimes, all it takes is for a player to be given a chance....you can just look at Miles Austin for an example of that.

Exactly, what i think will happen is this;
First, hopefullly columbo will be back and ready to get by the last game of the regular season so we will have experience at ROT heading into the playoff season.

Next, with Doug Free playing, he will see that he has gotten manhandled some this year, and need to get stronger in the offseason. This will motivate Free to work harder in offseason, OTAs, etc to improve.

Then, with the Cowboys probably drafting another top OT in the first round or 2nd round, (hopefully first round because we need a young stud on the offensive line), that will help us going into 2010 season.

With young Free, Holland, a young impact high draft pick,we will have some youth on the offensive line. You might even see Flozell playing OG some next year, if we get a good enough young offensive player to play from the NFL draft.

That way Columbo, Bigg Leonard Davis, Gurode and Kosier can still play while getting some breathers from the young offensive linemen of Free, top draft pick, etc.

Free was a big draftee that I liked to, alot of you didnt realize how good he was till he fractured his foot. You are seeing some of that now with him being downfield on blocks and wrs routes. That means he is a very athletic offensive linemen with the potential to really be great if he works at it.

A few things........
1) Holland and youth don't belong in the same sentence. He'll be 30.

2) Flo's next move is off the roster not to OG. If he does move to guard we got older while he stops progress of younger players.

3) Our starting OL will not be getting breathers from young players. OL is all about continuity and working together as a unit. If you have young OL worthy of playing, play em and cut bait with the old guys.

That's how we got too old in the late 90's.

This isn't "Hoarders".

Don't be afraid to let go.

30 is still younger than 34 flozell

you just watch, flozell will play some og next year if the cowboys get one of the top OT's in next years draft

it all depends on whom the head coach is next year, if a different coach i do feel that in some games like this year seattle game, more backups will play

because wade has a problem playing youth, generally wade doesnt like to, think about choice last year or felix at rb, or jenkins last year at cb but after last year when wade was forced to play rookies like felix and choice, this year jerry jones has stepped forward and said we will play rookies ogletree, and others more;

even wade has said he doesnt play rookies; but some head coaches play backups to have them more ready

i do agree with you about continiuty on offensive line, but if you look at some really good teams, like miami first year, they played their star OT or cleveland their first year with joe thomas they played him first year. Even the supposedly great belicheck the cheater played his 4th round pick volmer who is really raw on the offensive line; while keeping other vets in the game; even when flozell came into the game as a rookie and first year vet, he played OG some and played pretty darn well.

its kinda like larry allen, he played in the playoff game even though he had a bad ankle, erik williams played his rookie year a few games too; while at the same time we kept our proven offensive linemen till stepnoski, erik williams, were ready

if you remembered we signed a center ray donaldson that was an older vet, but he got injured, later we signed older derek kenard and he played center

mark tuneii played till he was 34 to 35 or older

you have to have a mixture on the offensive line of youth and vet experience and you slowly blend that in on games that are blowouts, till those players like larry allen are ready

if you remember we had mark tuneii in early 90s who was 30ish, vet nate newton older vet too, with frank cornish and og john gesek, young players were mark stepnoski, erik williams and larry allen in 94

just like this year you have seen ogletree

even though we have austin, roy williams, crayton, and hurd,

So your saying we should downgrade and get older at OG by playing Flo there vs LD or Kosier.

And how does factor into this?

He can't sniff the field, but now he's going to out play Kosier/LD?

Let's not forget Holland can't even get to the games on Sunday cuz he can't beat out Proctor this year.....

Nor was he good enough to get to the games vs Proctor/McQ last year.

Now he's going to outplay Kosier/LD and the guy who could might blossom into a young Larry Allen late in his career (Flo).

Is anyone really shocked when OT's picked top 3-5 play early (Miami, Joe Thomas). What's your point?

Vollmer was a 4th round pick? Got it. He may have been forced on the field by injury. You may want to look into that.

So we signed vets when we had holes to fill?

We may have signed Donaldson cuz Stepnoski left.

Not really sure. What do I know.

Love your 4 man rotation at OG though next year.

Brilliant.

.

I didnt say have Flo at ROG, at LOG replacing Kosier on certain plays, on other plays he will be either taking a breather or playing LOT till the first round draft choice is ready to take over full time. You keep Bigg Leonard Davis till he is 34 or 35.

He would be totally better at LOG spelling Kosier some, did you see Kosier also miss some key blocks in the green bay game too.

Let's not forget Holland can't even get to the games on Sunday cuz he can't beat out Proctor this year.....
Thats because of wade and we have 2 extra positions on special teams

Nor was he good enough to get to the games vs Proctor/McQ last year.
Pat Mcquistan will be gone next year; probably either cut or traded to Miami since parcells loved him;

Now he's going to outplay Kosier/LD and the guy who could might blossom into a young Larry Allen late in his career (Flo). Remember the bad ear in flozells ear, he can hear better and not be out on the island so to speak out at LOT, but be better at LOG. Again, he will spell Kosier some to keep Kosier fresh too in the game. Kosier will be 31 next year, best i remember.

What's your point? If we get one of the top OT's next year say anywhere from the 20th spot in first round to the 32nd, there are like 9 really good offensive linemen in next years draft, then that player will play some.

Vollmer was a 4th round pick? Got it. He may have been forced on the field by injury. You may want to look into that. To a degree he was, and wasnt, they have other offensive linemen that are playing for the patriots, i even made a list of available OTs for free agents and players on practice squad. What you have to keep in mind is that most likely Belicheck could lose at least 2-3 offensive linemen in next years free agency. Belicheck is getting those players like Volmer ready to play. When you have a talented player like Volmer, you play him and get him ready, just like he did with an OG he drafted in the first round a few years back, he got him ready that year.

So we signed vets when we had holes to fill? yes and traded for vets, remember the gesek trade and the hellestrae trade? Kennard and the center i told you about from the patriots in the 90s.

We may have signed Donaldson cuz Stepnoski left. True, but donaldson got hurt and we had to get kennard ready to play center, remember?

Love your 4 man rotation at OG though next year. Only 2 man rotation at OG next year, unless one of the players we draft as an offensive linemen next year is a top OG, theres a guy that i love in the draft, but he has mostly played OG, but can play OT alittle, he reminds me of a young nasty larry allen

This would be what i see in the offensive line next year
Top offensive linemen in the draft playing LOT some while learning from Flozell
Kosier and Flozell at LOG
Gurode at center, with proctor or duke preston at center
Bigg Davis at ROG; Holland backs him up
Columbo and Doug Free battling it out for ROT unless Free really steps up this year and at the end shows he can play tackle then you put Free at LOT with Flozell and draft that number one draft pick to get ready for ROT, columbo will be 31 or 32 next year. And in emergency OT you would have Free or Flozell, then in 2011 you let Flozell go;

Brilliant.[/QUOTE]
