IF we are starting Steele next season it is because we have blown the team up and we have a sacrificial QB starter
$25m in dead cap space to move on from Steele next year. Unless he’s an absolute disaster this year, which is certainly possible, Steele is the likely front runner for the starting gig in 2027.

well I guess they have a choice; they pretty much have to keep him but who says he has to be a starter? Unless like I said we have a starting QB that the team is fine with seeing get subdivided

If Dallas releases him in 2027, a standard pre-June 1 release would leave approximately:
  • Dead money: $15.225 million
  • 2027 cap savings: $0
That's because his 2027 cap charge is $15.225M, and essentially all of it would accelerate onto the 2027 cap if he's cut before June 1.

If they designate him a post-June 1 cut it's much more interesting:

  • 2027 dead money: $6.225M
  • 2027 cap savings: $9M
  • Additional dead money from the void-year structure comes later.
The current contract has void years extending through 2030, which is why the post-June 1 treatment gets more complicated.

I think we end up drafting or signing one after the season. We actually should have useable cap space after the season, even if we do extend Pickens.

that's a good breakdown. Thank you very much. This cap stuff and savings and when is best time to release a guy....it is so far over my head.

It's the season opener 2027. We're at home and the Cowboys just had their banner ceremony for the 6th title. After a quick 3 and out with two Barham sacks, the Sam Howell led offense trots on the field to a standing ovation.

Who is starting at RT?

Was Sam Howell the SB MVP as well in this fantasy movie ?

You sure? Spotrac is showing $25m in dead money.

I’m kind of cap dumb so I put everything through AI anymore and that’s agreeing with what spotrac is showing.….

2027 pre June 1 cut = $26.65m in dead money

2027 post June 1 cut = 2027 - $15.225m, 2028 - $10.425m in dead money.

I’m open to being wrong here, just trying to figure out why I’m wrong.

My greatest hope upon hope is that Cornelius can get there, but he looks like strictly a G to me.

Im going on a limb and say Cornelius.

At this point, I think Morris is better than either of them. I thought Jones would be a beast in the NFL. Surprised at how badly he's failed.

I could say 2nd rd draft pickee. But even then we'll have to see how even Guyton fairs this year, as it could swing to a possible 1st rd guy, with Guyton moving to RT.

To throw a 3rd rd pick on Broderick Jones, suggest that this is our 2027 third round pick . and very soon starter at RT.

Steele is gone after this year, imo.
Never been near the same since that ACL injury, imo
Looking at Steeles contract he’s gone after this season and it costs nothing. The question is do the have a replacement? Will they go sign a guy? Or draft a guy? He won’t be here next year either way
