For some time now, Calvin Johnson has been the best wide receiver in the NFL. But the title for the second best receiver has been up for grabs the past few seasons. Is Denver Broncos’ young stud Demaryius Thomas the league’s second best? What about Larry Fitzgerald or Andre Johnson who have been in the league for some time? Brandon Marshall has been very consistent over the years, is he better than everyone else?

Last year, I tried to tell convince readers that Dez Bryant was the second bestwide receiver in the NFL, behind only Calvin Johnson. Obviously, I got a lot of flak and criticism for that statement. The comments ranged from “it was just one year”, “his touchdown totals were fluky”, etc. But after another season has passed, I stand by my statement. Other than Calvin Johnson, there is no receiver I would rather have than Dez Bryant. Since 2012, Below are Dez’ stats compared to the other top receivers in the league:

Dez is definitely near the top of that group, it's very difficult too say their all very close. Josh Gordon was incredible this year, and Julio was leading the NFL in yards and catches when he went down.... I would put those guys ahead of Fitz and Andre Johnson at this point.

Cowboys fan or not, I'd take Dez Bryant everytime. AJ Green, Josh Gordon, Alshon Jeffrey, Brandon Marshall, and Julio Jones are all right there too.

Larry Fitzgerald and Andre Johnson are a little too over the hump, and Andre Johnson has never been known for putting points on the board (has never had dougle digit touchdowns in his career)

Demaryius Thomas is a product of Peyton Manning.

I'd take AJ Green over Dez Bryant. If building a team I'd likely plop Bryant in at #3. Notably I feel that those are the three best WRs in the NFL right now and they're all quite young.

Pick a WR going forward for long-term -
1. C.Johnson
2. A.Green
3. D.Bryant
4. J.Gordon
5. D.Thomas (A.Jeffrey, J.Jones also in discussion)

I think there is a large group who are all about the same but in different systems. I see above someone saying Andre Johnson hasn't had a lot of TDs but that is more a part of the system that Kubiak had where they didn't go downfield a ton and ran the ball effectively. Production wise he has been as consistent as it gets. Same with guys like Brandon Marshall. Then you have Gordon and AJ Green. Fitz is a stud but has been stuck with some horrendous QBs. Dez is definitely in the conversation. To me you'd really have to put each guy in the same system to really judge but overall they all have special talent to make an impact.

So many factors go into something like this. At some point we are literally splitting hairs. Clearly there is a group of elite NFL WR's and I am glad we have one.

I agree 100% with your top 3.I would put Thomas over Gordon right now though.

Theres a ton of really good receivers out there nowadays. You can throw a blanket around 6 or 8 of them. With college offenses playing pro style schemes more and more, the WR's coming out are more polished and ready to play the pro game than ever before.

Dez is my guy but i would probably give the slight edge to AJ Green because of his route running ability.

Agree a little Demaryius suffers from the fact they really do not use him inside the 20. SO he either has to run it in or he is not going to get a score

I'd definitely have Dez top 3-4. I want to put him at #2 but, IMO, he can be taken out of games due to emotions. Once he gets the emotions in check, there's no reason why he couldn't be #2 or even #1 in a couple years.

Bryant doesn't take punts anymore. His yards per catch is down from 15 to 13.2 he fumbles a ton for a WR. Too immature and doesn't even run many patterns. Hurts the team with taking off his helmet, running his mouth about being so great and stunts like walking off the field is not worthy of #2 distinction nor a contract with this team unless he improves his numbers and on his being a teammate.

This is how I'd probably rank them as well, and I wouldn't be surprised if J.Gordon is ranked #2 next year if he continues on the path he currently is.

I think what's holding Dez back right now is his route running, and his ability to get separation from defenses. Yes he's a freak of a nature, yes he's the best RZ threat in the NFL, but he struggles tremendously when facing double teams. I could be just nitpicking here, but when I watch other WRs it seems like they're more fluid and get open more consistently.

Also, like someone else posted, it'd help him as well if he could get his emotions more in tune. As great as Randy Moss was, he would sometimes let his emotions get the best of him as well and it affected his play greatly.

I think it all depends on the teams they play for too. If CJ was a Cowboy, would he be that dominating? I don't know....DET forces the ball to him(accumulates more stats) and I don't think Dallas would. Manning makes Thomas better as well and Green is utilized well in Cincy. Put AJ in Denver, he could probably be in top 3. Every WR has different conditions to play in, some better and some not. Schemes and coaching come into play too.

W/O switching players to make-believe teams and ranking according to where they are...................
1. Calvin
2. Green
3. Gordon
4. Julio
5. Dez or Thomas
6. Dez or Thomas

Thomas would not be in my top 5 if he wasn't in Denver and Dez might be top 3 if he wasn't in Dallas.

1.Calvin
2. Green
3.Julio
4. Marshall, Dez, Gordon tie.

4 is hard to pick because I believe dez and Gordon are more gifted, but Marshall's no slouch and he's far more proven and consistent. I think by the end of next year though, we see...

1. Calvin
2. Julio
3. Gordon
4. Bryant/ Green
5. Marshall
