Last year, when Hutchinson got that big contract, everyone thought it was an aberation. There was postering going on between the Vikings and the seahags, and the Vikings had so much cap space it was ridiculous. Hutchinson was the best guard in football, so while the price was shocking, it was not considered that extreme a deal, all together. And it was considered a one off.
NOW when we have good- not great, not even pro bowl- guards like Dockery getting 49 million dollars- and Steinbach, while a top guard, is not near to Hutchinsons status- gets 49.5 million- you KNOW things are going CRAZY.
All that cap money is begging to be spent, I know, but STILL....
Actually when you compare Clements to those contracts, his actually looks somewhat normal for a position (CB) that always demands the bucks.
I really have not seen another contract so far that is as EXTREME as those two guard contracts. I hope sanity and second thoughts will prevail after all the GMs have a night to think about it.

I think the contracts will start coming down a bit. Much of the top talent is off the board.

The first day is always a shocker.

The shocking thing is that it was GUARDS that were getting crazy contracts. That is a real first.

There's a reason for this. Teams make a big effort to grab the guy atop their FA list. It's just like when PS3 was coming out, people jack up the prices and there are always buyers no matter how outrageous.

Same principle.

That's a good point.

It used to be that most teams believed it unwise to draft a guard in the first round. Given the cost of top free agent guards, though, a 1st round guard makes much more sense than it used to....

i dont think he'll ever see the end of that contract. its basically 3 yr deal worth 7 mil a yr. in the first yr its 21something mil guaranteed. and the final yrs are at 2.62 mil with no roster or signing bonus.

The Dockery thread says he got 5 years 25 mil....did I miss something?

This kind of reminds me of the 03 offseason, when a couple corners got enormous deals (or at least what qualifies as an enormous deal at the time). That was definitely a position of need for us at that time, but we let people go crazy and foolishly (seemingly) stood pat with what we had.

That's not to say that the results would be the same - AT ALL. This is a far more talented team than that one. But, it will be frustrating.

So, at a time like this, it's important to keep in mind something.

It is, has been, and ALWAYS will be, about what you do in the NFL draft. I'd like to see Dielman here as much as anyone. But what would be even better? Finding our own Dielman in the 7th round, or having McQuistan and Procter be freaks. The teams that are spending big on free agents, aside from the Pats, are bad teams with little talent. That's why they have all this extra money - because none of their own players are worth getting that second big money deal. That's where we were a few years ago - but now....not so much.

Our inactivity thus far is about more than just exorbitant prices for guards that we dont want to pay. It's about Tony Romo, Terrence Newman, and the host of other young players that are going to need theirs soon. Just somethign to keep in mind....

The reason I wanted Dockerry is because I thought he would be cheap and fly under the radar. He did not deserve that bloated contract. I feel that Dallas should definitely bite the bullet and bring in Dielman and pay him similar moeny to what Steinbach just got. Unlike Colombo, he has been starting for a few years now. I wouldn't even mind paying both Dielman and Colombo since the cap seems to just keeps going up. A few years from now, people will be saying that their contracts are not that bad. Adams will not get a new contract and Dallas cannot afford to have two future wholes at the tackle if Procter does not have it. I do not want Leonard Davis though. He guy is a fat turd and is very very lazy. There is a reason the Cardinals let him go even though they have one of the worst Olines in the NFL.

I still think we should have signed Hutchinson and dumped Rivera last off season. Especially in light of the last 24 hours.

The Adams and Kosier deals look great right now. Kosier in particular...who I feel was our best lineman last year.
