For me it was the strike season, it changed everything. I remember after Troy Aikman. The Cowboys had at least 15 different starting quarterbacks before We found Tony Romo. I never would’ve thought Randall Cunningham would’ve played for the Cowboys.

I believe it started free agency. Start of the salary cap. So many games ,so many seasons. What is your one biggest memory about the NFL. Or the Dallas Cowboys.
Free agency didn't happen till 1993. Salary Cap the next year.

1987 strike
After playing the first two games of the season in 1987, players went on strike for free agency. In response to the strike, team owners brought in replacement players and continued the regular season after one week. It was also the beginning of discussions of the salary cap

The Washington Football Team always wins the Super Bowl in strike seasons. 1982, 1987. Not a good memory!

It was the end of the strike in 1987 that set all of that in motion. The NFLPA decertified after the strike, which allowed the players to file the lawsuit to gain free agency. Freeman McNeil led the effort. Once the case was in court, and it wasn't going well for the league, the NFL settled with them to get unrestricted free agency in exchange for a salary cap and the franchise/transition tags.

Thank you for clarifying. I’m not good at it. I just remember it

I wasn’t sure, I thought he was still coaching then . What a young voice lol

he quit coaching after 1979 iirc, in 1980 it was still Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier (the pair I listened to all the time when I first started watching in 1977 as an 11 year old), then in 1981 Madden moved up with Pat Summerall.
