I think so too but I am not 100%. But I believe it was when the Jets went through their QB string and then invited Vinnie back. Or the week before that.
It was just yesterday.
Jets' Edwards: ‘Maybe we’re all dumb’
New York's dismal season starting to take its toll on head coach

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The misery that has enveloped the Jets this season has finally rattled coach Herman Edwards.

The normally upbeat Edwards abruptly ended his news conference Wednesday, walking out after sounding off on critics who have targeted his conservative approach in what has become a disastrous year full of injuries and bad luck.

“We’re doing the best we can do. It sounds real good, ‘Open it up, go for broke, go do this, and go do that,” he said. “That gives you the best chance of getting blown out in a game, trying to play that way. It’s not like you throw caution to the wind. Go out there, run double reverses, trick plays. We’re not some circus team.

“Maybe we’re all dumb coaches. That’s fine. That doesn’t bother me.”

Clearly it does.

His biggest point of contention was a third-and-5 play against New England on Sunday. With the ball at the Patriots 20, the Jets opted for a draw to Curtis Martin. He gained 1 yard and Mike Nugent kicked a field goal to tie the game at 3.

In the first quarter, New England had a third-and-4 from the Jets 27 and also called a running play for no gain. Adam Vinatieri missed a 45-yard field goal. Afterward, Edwards was questioned about playing it safe instead of throwing on that play.

But that was the last time the call came up. Nonetheless, Edwards brought it up Wednesday when asked about trying to get Martin to 1,000 yards this season.

“I get questioned for third-and-5, running the draw, trying to tie the game up before the half,” Edwards said. “I’m going to answer all those questions between now until the end of the season. I understand that. But the same scenario, they’re on the 27-yard line, they missed a field goal. How about that?”

Edwards gathered up his notes and said, “Press conference over” before walking out the door.

It certainly has been the most trying season of Edwards’ career as a player or coach.

The Jets (2-10) are going with Brooks Bollinger, who before the season started had thrown a handful of passes in the NFL. Vinny Testaverde came in and was a savior for one game, then showed his age with countless mistakes and key fumbles before going to the sideline with a leg injury.

But these are the Jets, who always seem to stumble after getting a sniff of success. They have made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons just four times, and never three times in a row. A couple steps forward, plenty of steps back.

“This team is working as hard now as I remember us working in the years we went to the playoffs,” Testaverde said. “We’re just not seeing the results for a number of reasons. But the effort is there. And that’s all you can really ask of the guys is to put the effort in and keep moving forward.”

There is no doubt Bollinger has his hands full. The offensive line is a mess, the tight end is virtually invisible, and Curtis Martin is nowhere near the player he was last season. No wonder the Jets simply want to play it close to the vest and hope they have a chance to win at the end.

Certainly not a recipe for winning many games. And it clearly violates Edwards’ most famous catch phrase, “You play to win the game.” At this point, the Jets play to stay in the game.

“We have to go out and play, too, we have to attack teams. That has nothing to do with the play calling,” Bollinger said. “Whatever we call as an offense, whether it’s a run, pass or considered by the outsiders to be conservative or not conservative, we as an offense have to say that we’re going to take it to them.”

Edwards hinted Testaverde might get back onto the field at some point in the final four games, but refused to disclose how that plan would work. Testaverde is itching to play again despite all the struggles on offense.

“There’s no magical potion,” Edwards said. “We have to play this way, OK? Everyone’s missing that. We act like every week there’s something going to be different. What’s going to be different?”
