who were the most underrated cowboys during 90s championship run...

And that team had the benefit of the Herschel Walker trade.

I would have to say Tony Tolbert was the most under rated player on those teams. He was better than his sack totals would suggest and came up with several big plays over the years.

our three time super bowl championship teams in the 90's?

Tony Tolbert, no doubt about it... good for double digit sacks, and for a few years there, led the NFL in tackles by a DL... IOW, he was really good against the run, too...

Which is hardly surprising, after all he came from that noted football mill, the University of Texas at El Intercepted Paso...

This would not be a popular answer, but this man makes players:

mike woicik-strength and condition coach

He collected 3 SB rings in Dallas

And collected 3 SB rings in New England about to get his 7th overall this year.

Thats not a coincidence

I think our whole team is underrated as far as place in History. I think we matched up well with any team from any era. We didn't really have weaknesses and we were extremely balanced.

defense:

tony tolbert
darrin smith
chad hennings
dixon edwards

special teams:

kenny gant

tell me some i'm missing....bring me back some memories ....

I don't think any of those guys were underrated. None of them where dominating. I think Jimmy just instilled team play in them and they played very well as a team.

Here's a dude maybe not many remember, and I'm putting his name out there because I'm trying to be alittle original:

Special teams player Matt Vanderbeek, I think we only had him on the '93 SB team, but that guy had no fear about going down and making a big special teams tackle.

Another guy is Robert Williams in, I remeber him blocking a few punts during his career, which seems to be unheard of today, but I always appreciated the effort these guys made on ST.

And don't forget the King Of Special Teams Bill Bates...need I say more about him.

I will have to agree with what a few other posters mentioned about Kevin Williams. Not much of a receiver at all. Good on special teams, but not great. Cost some games with turnovers. Dallas took KW in the 2nd round with their first pick of the 1993 draft. I think by those standards he was a disappointment.

Chad Hennings was not underrated during the Superbowl runs. He had not even developed into a roll player during the first two championships due to getting back into football shape after his Air Force stint. He became a solid player for Dallas, but not much of a contributor to the 3 SB wins in 4 years.

I don't know if Kenny Gant is underrated when it comes to special teams. He seemed to have a pretty big following. Most fans seem to know him for is shark dance and he was the leader on special teams. He maybe a little underrated as a defensive back in the Cowboys nickel and dime packages.

Tolbert is probably right on as the most underrated defensive player.

:laugh2:

James Washington was a bigtime unsung hero for that team.

Offensively, I think it was Tui.

Defensively I think it was Jim Jeffcoat.

You gotta mention Moose Johnston. Full back always gets overlooked. And Moose will probably never be in the Hall of Fame but he was so important for the team in their blocking.

How bout Thomas Everett? And Kevin Smith before his achilles tendon injury. Used to play great coverage on Jerry Rice in the NFC Championships in 92 and 93. Someone mentioned Robert Williams on special teams with blocked punts. I know this guy used to get toasted a lot, especially in 1991 which led to Dallas drafting Pup in 92, but Issiac Holt also blocked a few punts that season as well if I recall. I remember that one vs Washington in the season opener on Monday Night Football.

I don't care without Haley we win no SB in 92'''', he put our defense on the map, he gave are defense a face Tolbert was good and I like him, but never was a game changer, Castillas, Jones, Hennings, Maryland, were solid due to the fact they rotated all game....

So all in all Haley was the most underrated and should be in the HOF.....

I think Haley will be in the HOF and I agree with the importance of Haley to the success of the Cowboys. Side note: Haley has more SB rings than any player in the history of the NFL, 2 with the 9ers and 3 with Dallas for a total of 5

There were only three defensive guys that were better than just "Good" on the team. Charles Haley, Ken Norton Jr., and Kevin Smith. Charles Haley was the greatest forced that didn't always dominate with sack production though he still produced 100 sacks. Only six of his twleve years did he have more than seven sacks. In those six years, he produced 73 sacks. (avg 12.1 sacks a season) In the 1992 season you are speaking of, he only produced six sacks, and only four the following year, yet he still dominated opposing offenses. It was his pressure that allowed Tony Tolbert to play as well as he did. (which wasn't that great anyhow and people are crazy in my opinion to say he was underrated) Tolbert's career was over one season after Haley retired from the Cowboys. Enough said.
