Quick poll before we enter the 2022 season. It’s been fairly clear that Mike McCarthy will start this season with a warm seat. A non-playoff season or maybe even another “one and done” playoff appearance would likely end his time here.

So who’s our head coach next year? Will Big Mac save his hide or not?

I'll start the ball rolling and right now I'm going to cast my vote for Mike. I think first off to keep his job a play off appearance is a must else he will be fired. I think if he can win the divisional round he will be retained

Mike McCarthy has 3 years left on a contract that pays him 4-5 million a year. The Jones Family, Inc. isn't going to pay that to fire him, then pay another head coach's salary on top of that.

I would love to see someone like Payton as the coach. But then reality slaps me in the face. McCarthy will be the HC.

LOL,, hold onto your panty hose guys.... MM will still be HC til 2024 at least. He is not a FA til 2025. Expect him to coach for the full extent of his contract, barring a collapse of monumental proportions within the next couple of years. The guy is cheap, weak, no leverage and best of all... understands Jones is in charge. After that, all hell breaks loose in Cowboy land.

It's about time Jerry's Master Plan comes to fruition and his Coach in Training audition be recognized.
Jerry will show all you non believers.
He IS a football guy!

Now Kellen, come on down! You're the next contestant on Jerry's 500 Coaches could win a trophy with the talent I bring in Gong Show..

Unless we make a playoff run this year, the coach in 2023 will be Dan Quinn. He will oversee the culture and locker room and remain the DC with an assistant. That only happens without a decent playoff run, and without a playoff run, we will also find a new OC, so it’s Quinn all the way.

If we have a good playoff run, Mike will return, but we may see new coordinators.
Due to Parsons and some of our other pieces, I think DCs will be lined up to show Jerry what they want to do with these guys.

McCarthy checks all the checkboxes.

Sits to the side in the draft room? Check.

Sits to the side during "major" team press conferences? Check.

Players like him? Check.

The only way I do not foresee McCarthy in 2023 is if he loses the locker room and the team goes on an extended losing streak a la Wade Phillips and the 2010 season. Otherwise, McCarthy's the right man in Jones' eyes.

Don't fool yourselves. Big Mike will be HC until his contract ends.
This is the same Owner/GM that kept Garrett around for 10 years.

Unless McC makes some "media can't stop talking" mistake during a game, he will be the HC in 23.

Let's say the team doesn't make the playoffs, aren't the two coordinators just as much to blame? Why hire them?

It is unknown as to whether Payton wants to coach but he passed up a rumored 20M a year from Miami. Do you really think Booger is going to even approach paying any HC that kind of coin?

McC is safe for the same reason Garrett was for 10 years, they are both HC in name only. Booger has to shoulder some of the blame because he wants the credit.

Booger, inadvertently, dropped the hint during a pc when he let it slip that he approves the game plans. Think all of the GM's do that? Think most of them even know how to do that? Before you answer that, 30 GM's work for owners. Do you think they want to be on the line for a HC's game plan if he is on the hot seat?

No, they hire the man and then let him go about building his staff and he's given the rope to pull himself up or hang himself. 30 GM's in the NFL are all about buying the ingredients, not getting in the kitchen where it is the hottest. There is only one owner that makes the HC announcements in the league. Not even Mike Brown does that.

So, if you consider Payton, Booger must pay him and stay out of his kitchen, think that will happen?

As far as hanging that playoff loss on McC, didn't Quinn know exactly what the Niners were coming to do? He didn't stop it, that was as much, if not more, on him than McC. And McC, shockingly, admitted in the post game to having no participation in the game plan or calling and this is a respected offensive coach in the league,

Bullet asks an interesting question to which I really only have one response. Does it really matter?

All of the Payton talk is just stuff Jerry would love circling his self created circus. Sean Payton or any other respected NFL quality HC will not be coming to Big D without some major operational changes JJ would never agree to. Like the HC having the same authority 30 other NFL HCs do.

The HC position in Dallas as long as Jerry is the face of the franchise is mostly a figurehead job. The HC has some say so in roster decisions, some input into game planning, authority to make in-game decisions like timeouts and challenge flags, and has some authority in the locker room.

But anyone looking honestly at how this franchise is run has to know that no major decision-on or off the field- is made without the complete sign off from Jerry Jones. That includes game plans, final roster decisions, final approval on draft picks, which sponsors are approved for advertising and which hot dogs are served at the stayjum.

It all depends on how hot in the kitchen it gets . A 1-7 type start could definitely bring about change much like a losing season 4-13. Possibly even a non playoff season if there weren’t some major scapegoating like major injuries in 2020.
