That's one of the interesting things that always seems to come out of TC. At least 1 player steps up play to unexpectedly make this team or goes from a backup to starter. That eliminates all last year starters cause we expect them to play well this year (except for a guy like Keith Davis & Rob Pettiti whose play we unhappy with in 05). So I don't include Adams healthy return, Riveria's healthy play, Ferguson's healthy step up play nor Carpenter's beating out/or not beating out Singleton in TC as a surprising development.
So in order to be a "surprise player", in my opinion he has to be one of the following:
1. undrafted rookie,
2. 2nd day draft pick (but also including 3rd pick Hatcher whose very raw),
3. FA's like M.Coleman & Kosier,
4. young players injuried in 05 & didn't get chance to really show what they can do like Beriault, Burnett, Ratliff, Burnett & even Colombo (FA signed late in season in hopes regains health & contributes in 06) who come on in TC to solidify legit backup status or even challenge starter,
5. questionable starters like Keith Davis & Rob Pettiti
6. PS players like WR Jamaica Rector, Ahmad Merritt, OG Proctor
7. backup like Peterman who some calling a bust
In other words WR Rector beating out #4th WR Copper to make team would be a surprise, Peterman playing so well he challenges Kosier (also playing much better then we all expected), Pettiti/Colombo beating out Fabini to start at RT, and my favorite would be Watkins seriously challenging to start at FS (if not in first regular season game but obviously sometime in 06 season).
