Or have lived there. I'd like to hear from you before we visit. Thinking about the Big Island and Oahu.

Big Island - I wouldn't say it's barren, but you have to do a lot of driving to get to the more populated parts. Love the Big Island. People should just be aware it isn't 'touristy' as Oahu.

Oahu - CROWDED. It's where all the tourists go.

Would like to add another island to your list: Maui. Not as populated as Oahu, but still 'touristy.' Lots of cool things to do on Maui.

If possible, spend a few days on another island of your choosing, then island hop to another island.

Thanks! Working on it...slowly.

Yea, I'd stay away from Oahu unless there's a specific reason you want to go. Although, the best deals will be on Oahu.

Miss Oahu and you miss Pearl Harbor.

To me that was the #1 reason to go to Hawaii... Well that and see my daughter who's stationed there. :D

Blow off Hawaii and just go to the Cayman Islands. I have been to a lot of island destinations and GC/Cayman Brac are my favorites. Great food, fishing and diving and very friendly people.

Hawaii is fun too but very touristy and expensive. It is a place those need to go visit once in their lifetimes but to make it a permanent vacation spot is a bit much to me. If you do go, make sure to see Pearl Harbor, experience a Luau and hike along some volcanoes.

Oahu baby! Best of both worlds. For a city person, you can feel at home in Honolulu or if you want to get away from it. Drive north and hit the Northshore (Haleiwa). Or you can check out Lanikai. Nice calm beach. Love it in Oahu. Lots of fun hikes (Kokohead, pillbox, Stairway to Heaven, etc)

Been to Maui twice and the big island. Not for me. Fun to experience, but too laid back for me.

Jobberone wants to get leid in Hawaii, this why he is asking all these questions!

Jobber... if you go and you rent a car, then consider leaving the windows rolled down (and of course nothing of value in the car) when you do say do a beach thing.

One of the great "hidden" secrets of Hawaii is the amount of crime... especially car break-ins. I know of two folks who had side windows smashed while they were parked at the beach. You would think all the people there would dissuade that type of activity... Well guess again. Rental cars are easily spotted by those that prey on such things.

Thanks MW. Will do. We want to spend time on Maui, Hawaii, and Oahu.

I used to live there, on Oahu during my junior high and high school years. They're right about Oahu being very crowded and expensive. There are some things to see there such as Pearl Harbor. Waikiki is beautiful, but is a super commercial tourist trap. There are better beaches on the North Shore. If you like snorkeling, Hanauma Bay in the Honolulu suburb of Hawaii Kai is beautiful. However, it would be a bummer to visit Hawaii and not go to Maui and Kauai. There not so built up, especially Kauai.

The cheapest way to see lots of different Islands is to book passage on the Pride of America. It's currently the only cruise ship registered in the United States, hence it's the only American one. It becomes your moving hotel. It's way cheaper to go to a lot of islands via the Pride of America than if you flew from island to island and paid for hotels. You should be able to find its schedule online via a search.

Thanks. Took a look at that and its a good way to see several islands much cheaper than doing it on your own. Much cheaper. Thanks!

I have lived in Hawaii my entire life. From the Big Island. Big Island is a very laid back slow style country feel. If i were a tourist i would visit Kauai, Maui or Big Island for the true Hawaii feel n experience, i am biased though.

I can answer any questions you may have. Its a nice sunny day here on the Big Island on the Kona side =D

My family is originally from Moloka'i.

I really need to get back soon. My daughter is still too young to fly so it's going to be a while.

I miss the week long family reunions on the beach. Fishing, hunting, and collecting limu from the ocean for our luau's. Digging the imu, collecting the rock and banana leaves and Ti leaves for it.

We'd all pile into trucks then drive deep into the valley and jump off the waterfalls into the lagoons.

Life was so much simpler back then.

Miss home!
