Why are so many ready to part with Irving for a 2nd?

There's tons of speculation that the Cowboys will tender Irving at a 2nd round level and they'd take the pick if he was signed to an offer sheet by another team. My question is who in the hell are we going to get in the 2nd that will give us the production of Irving? Taco was drafted in the first and if I had my choice, I'd take Irving over Taco, right now, What gives?

Tolerance or the lack thereof. There's a knucklehead factor attached to Irving and that scares some way. But if the Cowboys concerns are real it will be no secret to the rest of the NFL, and the line at the Cowboys door offering a second round pick might not be as long as many think. I myself hope it works out and he becomes a consistent force in our defense for years.

I'm not sure I'm ready for that, but the idea is that you do it if you don't think you will be able to extend him next season. So it's really one-year-of-Irving for a 2nd.

It all depends what his parameters are, and how uncomfortable the team is giving him a big contract given that he's a bit of an odd duck with a couple of minor red flags.

We've been burnt enough betting on someone's upside. If something is making them nervous, I can't blame them. That said, I too hope that he can put it all together & give us the player he is capable of being.

I think for some it's not that they are OK with taking a 2nd rounder, it's that if the Cowboys are willing to take a 2nd rounder, that should tell you something.

Dallas typically doesn't walk from knuckleheads. They seem willing to take PR hits for these guys if they think he can play. And certainly, he can play a bit. So if they are throwing a 2nd round tender and willing to let him walk if a team wants him, I think, at least to me, that there is something there that is bothering the Cowboys.

Personally, I wonder if they are scared of his concussion. He was having severe symptoms weeks after the initial hit to the point he was in a car accident like 4 weeks later and admitted that after he hit the other car, he had no idea where he was or what he had done.

Draft picks are gold to people in draft season. I think people look at Irving with all his stuff (odd behavior, inconsistent play, missing games, etc) and weigh it against a 2nd rounder and that seems like the easy way out.

I personally would put a 1st round tender on him this year and draft depth behind him. If he continues his inconsistency than let him walk next year and go with your draft pick. If he can turn it on this season then even better, he's already showed he can be a bad man on the field when he wants to be.

There are lots of odd ducks that play on the D line in the NFL so that is really not a factor. There are some concerns about his maturity and self discipline but I do not believe they are all that.
My personal thought is that the concussion thing is what is really the deciding factor.

Because they are stupid

D Irving at 4.1m is a steal............ if he leaves next year as a FA we can still get a 3rd round comp pick

So we get another year out of Irving and a draft pick

If he goes next level we still have his rights thru the Franchise Tag

This^^^.

If Irving was in the draft this year he would go top 15.

Not if teams were afraid of his concussion issue. And IMO, as I said, I wonder if that's part of what is driving this. The guy admitted to the press that a few weeks after hitting Cousins, he got into a car accident and when it happened he had no idea where he was or what happened.

That's a pretty big red flag IMO.

THIS

And with the Cowboys as desperate as they have been over the last few years to generate a pass rush it really tells you how worried they are about his maturity and where his head is to let what seems to be a talented pass rusher go even for a second round pick.

I hate the thought but I’m guessing fans think he’ll get suspended again or miss a ton of games...
