Why are we keeping Orton?

Obviously, he wants to retire and not play any more. I feel that Weeden it's just as good as Orton. Last I saw it will save us some cash.

So what's the hold up... Can't we just cut him/ move on? (Push him to retire)

Can't keep letting these idiots take advantage of their situations (See: Ratliff)....gotta send a message...I still say max fine him for anything that he misses and cut him on the last possible day so that the team doesn't owe his 2014 salary and he can't get ready to play for someone else....

No we just can't cut him, he will retain all his $$$. If he retires he has to pay back $3 million, and I believe that gets added onto the cap that we have left.

I don't even think we need to cut him necessarily... I think we can just put him on the reserve/retired list. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

A lot of sites have it as $3M but I don't see how that would be the case. His initial deal was 3 years with $5M as a bonus. He's fulfilled 2 of those so I'm not sure why he'd pay more than $1.6M.

Maybe there's more to it, I dunno.

What if, on the off chance, he does? And he just wants out of Dallas? Still have to consider that this is a Ratliff type situation.

It was technically a 5 year deal, but called a 3 year deal because the final 2 were dummy voidable years that allowed the team to stretch out the bonus for cap purposes. That leaves 3 years remaining of 5 on a 5M bonus, i.e. 3/5 * 5M = 3M.

If he had just played 1 more year, then it would have voided and he would not have to pay back anything.

Yes, if he does not report that's what would happen; however, he will most likely report at some point. If he does report, then they either have to keep him or cut him. Assuming that they don't want to keep him, I don't know how the Cowboys can avoid cutting him if he does show up.

And you don't think the arbitrator would view it as a 3 year deal, if that's what it really is? Regardless of what it technically was, I doubt any mediator is going to ignore the actual commitment length.

If he's only required to play 3 years, how can anyone justify taking more money from him based on how the Cowboys manage their cap?

Holding him until as late as possible won't do anything to prevent him from getting a job.

QBs who can play will always be picked up.

Right, but having missed training camp, he probably wouldn't be playing any time soon. Which, now that I think about it, would probably be just fine with him anyway.

It's technically a 5 year contract. The final 2 years just happen to have a team option to void.

I would think that if he told the Cowboys that he would pay back the 1.6M that they would agree to it; however, I'm not sure that he even wants to do that. He has the leverage. If he shows up to TC they either have to keep him or cut him. Are they really going to keep a player that clearly does not want to be there? It will cost them an extra 3.25M to keep him for the season; whereas, they can keep Weeden for 500k.

I'm not certain that he started this process with the idea of really retiring. I think Orton and his agent thought they had leverage to somehow get more money from the Cowboys because of Romo's back situation. I've heard whispers that he wanted his contract reworked such that if he had to start games that his pay would drastically increase. If he really just wanted to retire, the easiest option would be to just show up out of shape and just be a little of with all of the throws in practice. It's really hard to be a good NFL QB, even in practice. It wouldn't take much to not be good enough and force them cut to you.
