Why aren't Emmit and TO the same?

Didn't Emmit sit out training camp in 1995 wanting a new contract? Why is TO different?

I know this is sacreligious, but I was just thinking that the only difference is that Emmit is a nice guy and TO is a perfect example of cranal analism.

Then again, Emmit's situation may have been different and my memory is failing.

Emmitt was a FA who was negoiating a contract. TO has a contract in place.

And Emmitt didn't sit out the very next year after signing a long term contract either.

Emmitt was not a free agent when he held out for a new contract. Thus the term "hold out". Had he been a free agent, he would have been free to negotiate with any team in the league.

If I recall correctly, Emmitt was still playing under his rookie contract and was coming off of a SB season and rushing title. He wanted to be paid what he felt he was worth. He went on national TV and told the world what he wanted and after losing the first two games of the season, Jerry made the deal.

So, from the perspective of "you signed the contract, play it out" then there is no difference between Emmitt and TO. The difference is that Emmitt hadn't signed a bid-deal the previous year and then started crying about taking care of his family. Emmitt got much more sympathy from the public because he was a "nice guy" and because he had a valid point that he was not getting paid according to his production. TO doesn't have either of those to back up his argument.

Emmitt contract was up and FA was not in place so no he could not just talk to another team. Emmitt held out until he got the contract he was looking for yet once he got the contract he never held out again.

Emmitt had also been with the Cowboys since being drafted. TO on the other hand FORCED a trade to the team he wanted just because he and his agent were too stupid to file proper free agency papers. He then plays one season with Philly and cries like a *****.

Cool. I knew there was no way he was a FA. Thx for the clarification.

wow, I was scrolling and scrolling until I found your response and youre the first to point out this key point - free agency had not begun yet until what about 2 years later

The main difference is TO is saying SB doesn't count as part of yearly proportionment. Hes trying to say the SB they gave him last year was part of last years salary. If a team gives him a big SB this year, then hes going to do this every single stinking year.

And Jimmy with tears in his eyes after losing the 2nd game in a row and Haley putting his helmet through the locker room wall.

That and Emmitt didn't throw his starting QB under the bus like TO has done with not only one, but two of his Quarterbacks.

Emmitt had a superbowl MVP and 2 superbowl rings in his 20's. Emmitt was a class guy who wanted to stay with the cowboys. You should not mention Emmitt with TO being the same in any way ever again.

You recall incorrectly. Emmitt was not under any contract when he 'held out', he had fulfilled his contract and was an exclusive rights free agent or some such nonsense. He basically had to sign with the Cowboys, but he was not under contract at the time. His production vs his pay had nothing to do with it other than the fact that he was up for a contract and wanted to sign a new contract in accord with his performance. He never held out at any point on any contract he signed throughout his career.

"exclusive rights free agent" There was no such thing at that time. Free agentcy was still a few years away. Emmitt like any other ball player at that time either signed of held out the entire year there were no other options unless the team chose to trade you

I believe the term at the time was exclusive rights free agent. The term free agent was not invented two years later, unless I'm really confused. We got Novachek as a plan B free agent. There have been various forms of 'free agency' in use in the NFL for years prior to the current, more genuiune, form. I also said that Emmitt had to sign with the Cowboys, but was not under contract.
