Why Can't Frederick be Maurkice Pouncey?

The Steelers drafted Pouncey with the 18th pick in 2010, where we originally were tonight. Pouncey started all 16 games as a rookie (on a team that lost the SB after he was injured in the AFC championship), was voted to the pro-bowl, and got 2 ROY votes. Nobody was complaining about him when the Steelers drafted him, as a matter of fact I remember more than a few people hoping he would become a Cowboy at the time (though I wouldn't trade Dez for him). The funny thing about all of that to me is that coming out, Pouncey wasn't much different than Frederick is right now.

Maurkice Pouncey 2010

6'4 1/2", 304lbs, 32 1/2" arms, 5.29 40, 4.92 20yd shuttle, 7.74 3 cone, 26" vert, 95" broad, 27 reps

Travis Frederick 2013

6'4", 312lbs, 33" arms, 5.58 40, 4.76 20yd shuttle, 7.81 3 cone, 28 1/2" vert, 97" broad, 21 reps

Skill-level. Frederick isn't on the same level as Pouncey was coming out of college, that's why he wasn't on many teams' radar in the 1st round whereas Pouncey was considered a Top-25 pick.

are we really going to just compare measurables and say they are basically the same? surely you know there's a whole lot more that goes into this.

The athleticism on the football field between these two is not even close.

most posters will declare whoever dallas got wasnt that great, yet what other teams draft are oh so smart and way better. you cant win with that crowd.

Just read most of the posts up to the draft, so many posters were saying nothing would be there for us at pick 18 yet any team who got something after us got a great pick.

The pick was good, not a great pick nothing sexy, but lets hope for solid for years to come.

The same reason Torrin Tucker wasn't Flozell Adams despite their similar size and metrics.

I don't think we've seen that the last 3 years in the 1st round.

It's just a bad pick for the 1st round of the draft. He's not a complete enough player to validate the pick.

well people use measurables to grade the player so why not? look i dont think measurables are 100% but you cant have it both ways. you cant say frederick isnt as athletic as pouncey so he isnt as good but when the measurables are say otherwise you cant complete dispute it. from the eye test you can see that yes pouncey is a bit more athletic but i would argue frederick is stronger lower half. does frederick pass the eye test yes. does he pedigree pass the test yes. does he pass the interview test yes. does pass on the right type of guy with smarts test yes.

We have to hope he's not Pouncey because Pouncey is a pretty lousy center. Costa graded out better in '11 than Pouncey.

He deserved a Pro Bowl slightly less than Jeff Saturday did from the bench.

The word athleticism is being thrown out there as a blanket term. Pouncey was a starter on an SEC line, Frederick was a starter on a Big 10 line and OL factory. They are both obviously capable of getting the job done. When they were tested their measurables came out nearly identical. I think the word people are looking for is balance. Pouncey does play with better balance, which makes him look better at what he's doing. But in the end they both get the same job done. Sometimes its not about how you do something its about how it turns out...

There were debates over MO, (debates over Carpenter were valid) and if you look at the history, yes most posters are always complaining over a pick or two.

Tell me how hes not a complete enough player, id like to hear your take.

Not true. Living in Chicago, most of them hate their pick too and it was O-line.

this is true but i meant most of the posters here, it just seems with some posters, there would be no one worth picking at 18 (or whereever dallas picks) yet anyone who picks after us, a great pick and they did better. its just silliness.

Most people have to wake up tot eh fact that the draft is not a science. Its a lottery and you hope for the best. there are so many factors, so many odds that can go against you.

Look at how many gve up on Dez before he really broke out, or other players who have had a decent career.

Heck I myself wasnt big on the Spencer pick, and look how that turned out.
