I am sure this has been asked and answered, but I missed must have missed it.

Why does the NFL and the broadcast channels not sell famous or historic games on DVD?

Even better yet, why cant I buy the 1992 Cowboys season on DVD? I am not talking about those lousy season in review crap. I want to see all the games in their entirety.

Anyway, does anyone know why this cant be done or is not done?

I don't know if this is legal or not but I found some other teams on DVD:

Not sure if anyone has seen a reason for that, but I suspect its likely due to quantity sold vs production costs. There wouldn't likely be enough people to buy a whole season of old football games at probably 200+ per season to make the production costs worthwhile.

I dont know maybe, but you can not even buy the Superbowls on DVD.

I certainly believe there quite a few football fans who would purchase/collect Superbowl DVDs.

There has to be more to it than quantity sold vs production IMO.

I think that the NFL has film of nearly every game ever played. Seems stupid that you wouldnt be able to buy them.

If HBO can release Full seasons of the Sopranos, than the NFL could do the same.

I have a ton of Commanders games on DVD. But it would be very cool to have them without commercials and what not.

Yes I agree...it is an area that the NFL could make a ton of money off of...and normally that would be enough for the NFL to do it.

I wish they would do seasons at a time on DVD or maybe a boxed set of the best games of a franchise.

I'm so sick of the slow motion, edited NFL Films garbage. Give me the actual game videos. If crap like Mr Belvedere is available on DVD, so should Staubach in his prime.

You can buy this through NFL Films

Dooms is right. I just did a search and found these links.

Main NFL films site http://www.nflfilms.com/media
Unfortunately at the bottom of this page, it says
Full game prints are not available from NFL Films or any other source. It is impossible to obtain a copy of an entire NFL game.
To get the Cowboy history DVDs, either of these links will do
www.profootballdvd.com
http://www.warnervideo.com/profootballdvd/
It referenced www.nflshop.com, but I don't see DVDs yet.

Kinda limited, but you should be able to get some of what you're looking for.

since we're talking about the sale/purchase of illegal dvds on ebay... are there any newsgroups that post the recent or older games?

production costs for full season DVDs would be huge, and you'd get only 1-2 games per DVD which is prohibitive.

a better untapped market would be selling via DRM'd downloadable video (WMV) full season of teams like the '85 Bears, '72 Dolphins, '92 Boys, '86 Giants and seeing how that goes.

Production costs for full season DVDs might be a legitimate reason whole seasons are not on DVD, but what about Superbowls?

I mean I would love to have the 93, 94, and 95 Superbowls on DVD.

There is some reason that no games are available on DVD, and I want to know why. :bang2:

That is exactly what I am looking for and this is exactly what is not available. I know there is a reason why, but I dont think it is cost of production as some have mentioned.

It could be because the airing station owns the rights to those games for a certain amount of time after the airing, or indefinately, and the NFL would need to pay the network for the right to transfer it to video/dvd or give it a big portion of the revenues. The same thing could apply to the airing network doing the release.

The advantage of the TV shows on DVD is mostly likely that they are selling to a limited audience across the entire conutry as opposed to a limited regional audience. The sales of the 97 superbowl around here would be minimal, while the 93 superbowl sales in California would likely be low.

NFL Films owns the broadcasts that you see on Fox, CBS, etc. What I don't understand is why none of these games pop up on ESPN Classic, which broadcasts old NBA, MLB, and NCAA games all the time. If they can show Yankees-Dodgers from 1977, why not Cowboys-Commanders? Why sit on all that footage if you don't intend to use it or sell it?

There are alot of Cowboy fans nationwide, so sales would be good :)

30-ish teams is too much for nationwide that is for sure. Only the national teams like Fins, Cowboys, Raiders, etc. would be realistic.

Agreed they should sell entire superbowls (or sets) but the marketing dept. probably feels people want "fluff" not entire games. Hence the stuff on DVD now.

It would be nice to hear from an industy person about details of getting rights to the video, audio (announcers), etc.

But starting with the 'boys... why doesn't JJ push to make these available ala his independant apparel sales?

BTW does anyone else pretty much hate the "NFL Films" methods, style, presentation, lame 60-second highlights.. yuk!

Yes, indeed I do not like that style.

Just like when I bought the History of the Cowboys on DVD, the box says that the 1993 NFC title game is on the DVD.

Of course, only part of the game is on the DVD and it is in the style the NFL style that you refer too.

I bought some DVDS of 4 of the superbowls from eBay, the picture quality isn't that great for the 92-93 superbowls, its obviously from vhs as they are no commercials. Easily worth $10-$15 though.
