While the two sides are playing tiddly winks and jacks, waiting for judges to decide how football should be played, why can't the NFL start the League Year and let the UDFAs sign somewhere? It may be harder to determine the RFAs and UFAs, but I think the fans need something as a positive sign and this would be.

No Way...Not gonna happen!
If the players don't buckle, the owners are going to have to do 1 of 2 things which is to shut down all league operations until the season starts and game checks get missed or push to resolution of the Brady case and if they lose to force the cheap owners to accept Major League Baseball rules.

Those are the only two resolutions that will get the required owner' support.

Wut?

The year can't start because there's a lockout.

Is this a trick question?

The lockout can remain in place but the RFAs, UFAs, and UDFAs can actually find a home.

Most likely not... Last thing the owner's want is to start a league year.
I think Collingswood said today that in best case is for NFL games to be started in November if at all.

Then the door won't be locked, it would be cracked...Crackout? Speaking of crackout, I wonder what my unwelcome house guest is up?

I'm sure FA would love it since the reason they are upset and want this to come to an end quickly is because of signing bonus checks they were counting on. Owners would be hurting their own cause by going out and throwing big bucks around on FA.

I have no idea who Collingswood is, but the season is not in jeopardy. They will play the season under the 2010 rules if they have to.

The only people truly suffering are the Free Agents, and I don't approve of them being left hanging.

Players and player contracts are subject to the terms of a collective bargaiing agreement, and there is no CBA in place. I suppose the teams and the UDFA's could try to circumvent that by saying they are willing to buck the system and buck the players and the CBA process, but that's a pretty slippery slope I would think.

My sense is that that option is not going to hold and get 24 owner's to support another year like last year. They are already discussing other options like the shutdown and the nuclear option.

I'm not so sure this is the case. At the very least that would be a tough decision to accept for the owners because it would be a show of weakness on their part because it would send a message that they will back down rather than follow through with their demands.

are we saying we can avoid the lockout because electronics help us through it faster?

yes the players could go around and find homes without leaving the home, but the physical world must be obeyed as well.

The league year can't start but I'd like to see a roster exemption for next season. Teams get an additional roster spot provided it goes to an UDFA who was draft-eligible in 2011.

UFA and RFA aren't being hurt, they'll sign somewhere, but UDFAs are being destroyed by this. It's pretty hard to impress enough for a roster spot as a UDFA, but it's impossible if you don't have summer OTAs to do it.

If the old rules are thrown out and Major League Baseball rules apply:
All old contracts will be honored by the clubs... Stars will get paid plenty and get guaranteed contracts while everyone else will get UFL "chump change".

I'd like to see them come to some compromise for a continuation of 2010's no-cap year until they can agree upon a new CBA, but I think it's easier said than done.

1) I don't see how owners proceed to spend large amounts of dollars when they have little or no idea what the salary cap landscape will look like beyond 2011 (unless the league provides some sort of a 'grace period' for getting into cap compliance if it returns)

2) Putting large amount of dollars in players' hands will only allow them to hold out longer for the best possible deal and strengthen their resolve for future negotiations.

I think it's pretty likely that most of those guys will end up in Canada or something like that. The exempt angle, I think, is a pretty good idea but if the season doesn't start soon, it really won't matter IMO. The thing these guys need most are reps and if you sign an UDFA to a contract and pay him, it still doesn't provide for what is the most important piece. Those guys need reps. Even two exempt spots would be a good idea IMO, so long as they are filled with just UDFA guys. That's a good thought Stan.

This is exactly how I feel. Ah well, Peyton Manning will get his raise.

Actually, the players disliked the 2010 rules, not the owners. They disliked the previous CBA which they opted out of per a clause.
