Why did we draft Marcus Spears

What made him worth a 1st round draft pick.

Don't watch much college football, some I'm just wondering.

He has always been a player that didn't impress me, so I'm thinking what made him a 1st round caliber draft pick.

My understanding is that Parcells wanted Spears. In fact, he wanted to draft him over Ware. Jerry, based on the scouts' input, took Ware first. With the second first rounder, Dallas then took Spears, since Parcells' guy was still there.

I'm guessing we did it because we thought he could be a pretty decent NFL player - maybe even a great one.

He sings and does the stankey leg (from what I have heard anyway).

He was a great player at LSU. Played DE in a 4-3 at 300lbs, but still showed enough quickness that 4-3 teams did give him looks going into the draft.

46 tackles, 16 quarterback pressures, 3.5 tackles for losses and three sacks as a sophomore

49 tackles, 23 quarterback pressures, 13 tackles for losses, six sacks and six passes defensed as a junior

49 tackles, 21 quarterback pressures, 17 tackles for losses, and nine sacks as a senior

He had good measurables, but never was able to reach this level in the NFL

we had nothing better to do and he was there.

Come on, do you think we knew ahead of time he'd just be a solid player? No, the combine and coaches screaming who the best players are is to entice the draft and make it marketable.

Do you think people would tune in if the truth was told? "heres JP Losman and hes GOING To be a lame duck QB for the team that chooses to pay him grossly more than the bag clerk job at the local foodstore?"

You cant market the truth, so its hyped with a combine that doesnt prove the basic truth of the player.

Do you always like coming around to ask why Dallas didnt do better at anything.

We took Spears because Parcells and the scouting department did their homework on him, the rest is up to Spears, and hes been solid. Thats better than the other busts we've at in the first round.

Because he had/has all kinds of talent. He was a great basketball player even at his size (pretty sure Duke recruited him) and he played for a very tough coach in Nick Saban. I mean, when you watched highlights, the guy reminded a lot of us of Reggie White... He was just built the same way.

He just hasn't worked out that great, like happens with draft picks.

About the only red flag on him was that he supposedly didn't have the best motor all the time, and maybe that's what's kept him from being better. But he wasn't known as horribly lazy or anything like that.

Looking at the selection after Spears was taken in the 1st rd I don't see anything big we missed on. Dallas needed a DE and Spears was the man I guess it could be argued that Luis Castillo who went with the 28th pick may have been the better pick

As I recall, we drafted him to play Defensive End for the Dallas Cowboys.

All I was asking is what gave him a 1st round grade for a 3-4 defensive end.

Because we've had so many players in later rounds who are all probably better than him, so its questions why you would draft a player that high if you can get players of the same quality in later rounds.

We haven't drafted offensive linemen, wide receivers, tight ends, qbs, defensive tackles, inside linebackers in the first round in years.

How would you know that until after the fact? Spears graded out high not just by Dallas. There are few if any sure things in the draft.

I'll answer this if you tell me why black olives come in cans and green olives come in jars.

But not even a hint until I get some answers.

I can't even begin the imagine the fallout had we taken Spears over Ware. That would have been bad.

I'm not asking for hindsight, Im just asking what he did in college that made him project to be a 3-4 defensive end worth being drafted in the 1st round.

Again not playing the hindsight game, but logan mankins would have been great for us.

To play DE in the 3-4 scheme. And guess what happened?

He's solid against the run and every now and then makes contact with the QB. For what he does, I certainly wouldn't pay him more than $2M per year.

because everyones favorite idol Bill Parcells thought he was better than DeMarcus Ware.

The difference between green and black olives is that green olives are unripe and black olives are ripe. Both are cured/brined, but the method is a little different, and green olives are also allowed to ferment, while black olives are not. I think because they are fermented, green olives cannot be packaged in metal (because the metal can be reactive with the fermented substance), and must be packaged in glass.
