Why did we "give" away Fasano?

Watching the amazing catch by Fasano.....why did we trade him to Miami for so little to them? What makes it worse is we then wasted a high pick on Bennett!

More often than not Fasano is non-existant. Nice to see him make one of his two or three great plays per year.
I assume that Fasano is at best in the bottom 1/4 of the league in starting TE catches and yards.

I agree with the second part though. It'd be nice to a second rounder back about right now.

Didn't we get a 4th rounder for him and Akin Ayodele? Seems like we made out fairly well? We then traded it for Pac-Man Jones which i'm sure people will have a certain opinion about that but I personally felt Pac-Man wasn't bad here and is playing solid for Cincy right now.

He had shoulder injury issues repeatedly (not massive, but recurring IIRC) which was one concern they had at the time. Again, with Witten getting majority of all TE reps.......

Not a bad role player at all. Didn't want him with an early draft pick, but he has had a decent career really.

The book on him at the time was that he wasn't overly bright. Not sure that it's so big a regret.

I regret more that we spent two 2nds on a couple of players that don't to me look better than John Phillips or Hana, who were available much lower in their respective drafts.

Martellus has been good in NY. And he was a good blocker here. I wonder is is strictly coincidence that our running game has suffered without him but the Giants has gotten with him?

Thats the real rub. You burn a pair of 2nd round picks on a second-third tier position and wonder why you have to continually get your OL via FA.

Yep. Those 2nds would look pretty good on our OL at this point.

Its a team.. not a collection of individuals.

Have you met Mr. Witten? At the time, we went with the TE who was one of the best blockers in the league to complement the pass catching threat we had in Witten. It was the right choice, imo.. what has Fasano done?

400 yards and 4 TDs per season seems alright to me. Or in more familiar terms, since leaving he's averaging the production Ogletree has given the team this year.

I think we were considering the needs of the team. A very good blocking TE is a better option for this team than 2 receiving TE's. Im pretty sure that was their mindset.. i wouldn't be rueing the loss of Fasano either way, though.

I agree that it was dumb to spend a 2nd rounder on a backup TE to a HOF all-around TE. I also agree that it was dumb to do the exact same thing two years later and trade the first guy away.

Now I seem to remember that the big issue with Fasano was that he wasn't a good enough blocker for what we wanted to do on offense in the 2-TE sets. He was more of a receiver but not an explosive downfield type. Just kind of like Witten except not as good.

Sure. A better blocking TE is a need but only because the OL has been so inadequate.

Better OL makes the blocking TE (or 6th OL as it should be called) kind of obsolete.

Well considering our line the past how many years.. you can see why i feel like we decided that it was more important for our #2 TE to be a great blocker rather than have 2 receiving TE's who bring basically the same skill set.. with one being much better than the other.

Didnt like the move either @ the time but Parcells left and took a few Cowboys and coaches w/ him. Hated losing Parcells but Jason Garrett is now a good replacement earning his stripes and tapping the potential he has as head coach.
Witnessing the record breaking game live against Green Bay for JG against Favre makes me a lifer.

May as well rue the loss of Scott Chandler too. He has similar production but did not cost a first day pick. Any pick actually.
