Why did we use visits on these UDFA candidates?

It's seems like such a waste to invest one of 30 visits on these guys. If you were hoping to get them at a discount, you let the rest of the world know you have your eye on them. Am I missing something? Maybe these guys are getting buzz that I'm just not finding?

What makes you think we aren't considering actually drafting them?

Of the hundereds of guys we're considering, why use visits on seemingly random 6/7th round targets? Surely there are guys in the 2nd-3rd rounds they could target but didn't meet with.

I opened this thread with a head full of puns and one liners only to realize all the good ones are already taken.

The Cowboys have one of the best, if not the best, track record when it comes to UDFAs. Also, the Cowboys have been one of the better teams at drafting the past ten years or so if you measure by pro bowls and all-pros. People refuse to give Jerry and the Cowboys their due when it comes to recent drafting.

The Cowboys have been pretty transparent when it comes to the draft. They tend to stick to players they bring in for visits. And Jerry doesn't seem to even care if his draft board gets leaked after the draft like several years ago. Once or twice it happened. Fans had a great time looking it over after the fact. I wish all teams would release their draft boards after the draft. The fans would love it.

This is the NFL. There are few secrets out there. Scouts are talking among themselves. Coaches are talking. The same video of all the players is out there for all the teams to see. Teams know who is out there and where they will most likely be drafted.

As a Redshirt Senior (2015): Third-team All-MAC selection … participated in the College Gridiron Showcase … preseason third-team All-MAC by Athlon Sports … played in 12 games with 11 starts at defensive tackle … on the season, had 46 tackles, 8.5 TFL, 2.0 sacks, three hurries, three break-ups, and a fumble recovery … Akron’s Fantastic Four combined for a 92.9 rushing defense which ranks first in the MAC and No. 3 nationally… in the win over Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, had three solo tackles, a TFL, and 56-yard fumble recovery … in the shutout of Kent State, had four tackles, 1.5 TFL, and two hurries … in the win over Buffalo, had five tackles and forced the first fumble of his collegiate career … the Zips scored a touchdown on the very next play … in the win at Miami (Ohio), had four tackles … in the win at Eastern Michigan, had six tackles, 1.5 TFL, and a hurry … at Bowling Green, had four tackles … against Central Michigan, had a career-high two sacks (for a loss of 16 yards), the first of his Akron career … also had a career-high three TFL for a loss of 18 yards … had four tackles in the win at UMass … against Ohio, had three tackles and two break-ups … in the win at Louisiana, had six solo stops … missed the Savannah State game with an injury … made his debut as a Zip at No. 19 Oklahoma … had two tackles.

Deon King - Norfolk State - LB
After playing in 11 games as a reserve when he was a freshman in 2012, King took over a starting role the following year, logging 84 tackles (a whopping 18.5 for loss) and 9.5 sacks, enough to earn him Second Team All-MEAC laurels. In 2014, he received First Team All-Conference honors after a 106 tackle (22 FTL), 7.5 sack campaign. Last season, he led all of Division I (FBS and FCS) in total tackles, with an astonishing 163, winning the Buck Buchanan Award as the nation’s top FCS defensive player. King’s career production is outstanding: 372 tackles (52.5 for loss), 22 sacks, 5 fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles and three picks.

My guess is that we used them because we wanted to? Perhaps its not a stretch to think the Cowboys wanted to gain information on the players to evaluate them for the purpose of potentially drafting them? Is that too much of a stretch?

Maybe they also wanted to get a head start on recruiting them if they go undrafted? We seem to have done really well getting UDFAs to sign with us and developing then. Maybe they should be given just a little bit of credit about knowing what they are doing?

If we draft them it's only because they were just about to go off the board.
