If Jerry is having such a hard time deciding to get rid of Garrett and desperately wants him to stay, presumably as the head coach, why didnt he just extend Garrett last year?
We lost by 8 points in the Divisional round to the Rams. Jerry could have very easily said, "look, we were one-score away from going to the NFC Title Game and now is not the time to make wholesale changes like a new head coach". He could have then extended Garrett and nobody really would have said much, coming one-score away from the NFC Championship Game would have given Jerry the cover he needed. But he didnt do that.
Instead, Jerry decided that this was going to be some sort of prove it year. Stephen Jones went on the radio and said Garrett had to "get the team over the hump" to get an extension. They had to know the possibility existed that Garrett would not be as successful this year. I mean, in Garrett's entire tenure as a head coach he has never fielded back-to-back playoff teams. So Jerry and Steven had to know the possibility existed that Garrett might not even make the playoffs this year, which is indeed what happened.
So again, why would Jerry take such a huge gamble on this year being "the year" if he was not willing to carry though with actually getting rid of Garrett? And he had to have known that the fans would have given him a pass giving Garrett an extension after going to the 2nd round of the playoffs last year, but giving Garrett an extension after not making the playoffs this year would cause dam near mass rioting.
Jerry's actions are not logical. If there really was no ultimatum given and Garrett really didnt have to get the team over the hump to remain as head coach, why did they say this publicly? Why would you send this message to the fans? Why didnt Jerry just extend Garrett last year when he had the chance?
