Why Didn't Phillips Let Folk try a long FG to end the game?

I never quite understood the idea that the coach always knows best. Sometimes he is wrong. It isn't really that big of a deal I guess, but he should have given the rook a shot. This is not a minor position battle. The kicker has cost us too many games the last couple of years. That said, I wasn't impressed very much with Folk's kick offs. Grammatica was hitting them deeper it seemed.

Actually, Folks were 5-6 yards deeper each time. His hang time wasn't as good as Grammatica's though.

He is the coach it is his call to make. Another coach may have kicked it who knows but when it comes to this team it is Phillips job to make the call and in this case he choose to let the clock run down and call it a night. I don't see the big deal in this.

Hmmm, no they weren't.

Gramatica's 3 KOs were 71, 71, 66 = 69.3 average.

Folk's 3 were 62, 69, 74 = 68.3.

Geesh, nobody is making it a big deal...how does "I wish he'd have given Folk a shot," sound like anyone is dragging him across the coals for it?

At least you are consistant in your coaching apologist ways.:D

I'm not apologizing for anything, Wade made the call end of story.

Yeah, I just read that in the Daily Zone. I remember thinking the opposite last night.

Nothing is ever the "end of story" on a forum like this. That's why places like this exist.

There would've been no harm in seeing the rookie take another shot...Despite the coach's decision.

Must be comforting to never have an opinion one way or the other if it was the correct call or not.

My 1st comment was “I don't care what Joe Buck would have done”. Joe Buck is a no body so what he would have done does not mean jack. As for my opinion I did not care either way if we kicked it or called it a night. Wade made his choice and that was fine by me as I said I saw this as a non-issue. Folk will get more opportunities over the next 3 games that 1 kick was not going to make him or break him.
Lastly it must be comforting to be a major pain in the butt like you are!

I seem to recall that Gramatica was nailing his KOs last pre-season pretty well too -- just looked it up -- a 68 yard average in his 3 KOs.

It may be the case that he wears down.

Wow, so you can voice an opinion...good for you.:D

I don't think anyone in this thread, on either side of the issue, cares what Joe Buck thinks.

And we all obviously know what Wade chose to do.

So neither of those points has anything to do with this discussion.

The point remains that some saw value and little offense to the Colts in letting Folk try the kick.

Some agree, and some disagree. But the argument has nothing to do with what Joe Buck or what Wade thought.

Joe Buck, an idiot on most days, was right that Folk should have had the opportunity to take a shot. Wade should have called a time out and sent the rookie out there for his first opportunity at a long field goal under game conditions. Tony Dungy knows its preseason and I doubt he would have cared. I see little value in letting the clock run out, but plenty of value in the opportunity to test the rookie under game conditions. Will this wasted opportunity determine the kicking battle? No, but Wade made the wrong call by failing to maximize his opportunities and I have no problems with anyone pointing it out. It won't be his last bad call nor his worst.
