Why didn't we sign Joe Mathis

Instead we offered him a tryout and lost him to HOU. Even if we were really concerned about his medicals on the foot, who cares about losing $50k for an edge rusher with a very high, draftable grade? Especially when we really don't have a developmental RDE with Gregory poised to have his career ended. Not whining because I liked the draft and other UDFA's, but this was a real head scratcher for me.

we should have done what we did with Rico.
have no idea why drafting that big WR made any sense over a DL we wanted to stash.

Doesn't the guy have like 12 screws in his foot to hold it together and that some of the screw have actually broken off......not a guy you want to give money too.......serious medical concerns with him

Butler and Whitehead are easily replaceable....Switzer is a special teams guy and If Dez goes down, he has some injury issues, you're stuck with Williams the body catcher and Beasley....there is no depth of quality receivers on this team.......drafting another big receiver was a definite need..

And how can you stash him, he wouldn't make the team and he'd be exposed to other teams at the end of training camp anyway before you could place in on the practice squad and another team can sign him off of that too......

It's not even 50K is it?

The total bonus pool for all UDFAs is 80K, IIRC. Their salaries are not guaranteed.

Mathis said that he was never coming to Dallas and that it was a false report.

They could have offered him some guaranteed money if they really wanted him.

butler is replaceable, but that green receiver from ohio state has basically no chance of doing it.
we can stash a promising DL the same way we did with rico. guaranteed money and get him acclimatized to the system before releasing him at the last minute.
of course, if he plays amazingly, i am sure there is someone we can cut from the DL.

The money we're talking about here is so insignificant that it's irrelevant.

If we offered him just a tryout, which it doesn't seem we did, then we probably weren't all that interested.

It sounds like something his agent may have dreamed up to get him noticed.

he would have no choice if we picked him in the 7th round.
then guarantee money like we did with rico and release him just before season starts after he learns the system.

It sounds like the didn't even try to sign him according to the player on twitter.

jones know how to grab/stash udfas given rico and collins.
you are probably right - we probably did not want him that much.

But you don't know at this point whether a drafted receiver can make the team....I hope you're not basing that opinion on his college stats, because the NFL is about measurable's, not just his college stats which are based on the system the team runs on offense, the quarterback of the college team and players surrounding him on offense....

And as far as Rico goes, he may end up along the defensive line at some point himself....because with his size, length and weight(290lbs), he might be better suited as a defensive linemen than a tight end...time will tell on both!

Yea, it was mentioned a few times by Broaddus during the draft coverage, though I can't seem to find an article to confirm if true or not. Considering the serious nature of his injury, lack of ideal length and explosiveness and maturity issues earlier in his collegiate career, it's no biggie that we missed out a prospect with serious red flags.

all the descriptions of the WR is he was green.
we cannot keep an inexperienced WR in the 53.

i can even believe Rico is a possibility for the OL, but not the DL.

Yes let's draft a guy even when he doesn't want to be here.....
