Why do networks only show half the game?

Now it's time for my yearly rant.

/start rant

How would you feel if when showing a baseball game the tv only focused on the pitcher for each pitch and didn't show the batter? How would you feel if when showing a basketball game the tv only showed a closeup of the guy handling the ball instead of all five players? How would you feel if when watching Jurassic Park they showed the people screaming but never showed the dinosaurs?

Why do the networks insist on showing only the quarterback and line on passing plays instead of also showing the receiver routes? That may have been fine back in the 50's when teams mostly ran the ball and when they did throw they only had a few receivers in the pattern. However, now the passing game is very intricate with multiple receivers running complementary routes for other receivers on the same play. Fans are missing one of the best parts of the game!

The breakdowns by Rafael do a great job of describing how Garrett setup the Tampa defense. Unfortunately, as fans we don't get to enjoy it much do to the awful camera angles provided by the networks.

I've played the game and I've coached a few years in high school. I'm used to seeing a game film that shows how the entire plays form and not just an isolated part of a play. I can remember being able to scout teams and quickly pickup patterns in their play calling and formations. I can remember noticing minute differences in linemen splits to predict how they were attacking the defense. With today's television coverage we get none of that except on a handful of replays.

If they would just put one camera in each endzone and show each play from behind the offense I would be ecstatic! I think the majority of football fans would love it! It would give the fans a much better view of what the quarterback sees on passing plays and what running backs see on running plays. Or if they would just widen the camera to show about 30 total yards and raise the angle a bit fans would see so much more of the game.

Everyone must write their congressmen to demand that the network update their camera views to the 21st century! :)

Sorry, gotta disagree. I hate the end zone angle. I would have no problem with widening the shot - but that's because I have a 65 inch television. Casual fans might not like it.

Have you tried the NBC online thing they do where they give you multiple camera angles? I haven't tried that yet but it sounds like something you might enjoy.
