Always wondered, but specifically now with LVE. Be nice to see how he does this year before having ti make a decision. Anyone know the reason?

Its basically a mini version of the franchise tag designed to allow teams to control player movement at their option without having to use a franchise or transition cap designation. It is a "perk" for the owners, which allows them to control a highly valuable first round draft choice for one more year, if they so desire.

Per the CBA the team must inform the player that they will exercise and/or decline the option so the player is fully aware that they will be under contract for 1 more year or that they will be free agents. It allows the team to manage the cap hit with a known figure.

It is non-negotiable.

So, the reason it is done one year in advance is the salary - The mechanics of the CBA indicate that the salary is set in the players fourth year - at the transition tag level for the first ten draft picks - the average of the highest ten players at that particular position. The remaining selections ( 11-32 ) are based on the average 3rd - 25th selections. No other bonuses etc are allowed.

Thanks man. I appreciate it. Just for kicks do you happen to know the difference in calculation for 5th yr vs franchise tag?

It's basically because the nfl wanted the 5th year option on first rounders but they had to negotiate with the nflpa to get it. The nflpa wanted it to be a year early and originally got it to be guaranteed for injury. But now they negotiated it to be fully guaranteed. Which makes it not as valuable to teams as it used to be.
