Why do the Cowboys wait so long to sign players?

Do the Cowboys wait so long to sign players? Why isn’t Micah signed? I just don’t get the purpose. It seems to be a distraction the Cowboys do not need. Would it not be preferable to have Parsons in OtAs now?

The Cowboys like to wait. Some think its just to create headlines. Personally I think it has more to do with waiting on the league revenue sharing checks to hit the teams account. I think Jerry would rather pay that $150M check out of league TV money than dip into his own pocket or the teams revenue.

Jerry. His deadlines make deals philosophy just so happens to keep them in the news cycle. Then a record setting contract will be signed.

I understand your point but there are some counter points to at least be considered.

Guaranteed money & up front money. If player is signed & suffers an injury on or off the field, you are on the hook for guarantees (unless something prohibited by contract language). So, by putting off the contract you are avoiding those risks for a while longer. Up front money is pretty self explanatory. Also delaying those cash outlays.

Generally, if a player is up for the big time contracts, missing OTA's & even early part of camp isn't really that detrimental. Might even be preferable in avoiding injury & giving other players more reps.

Now does it cost you more in the long run, yeah. But both sides have to be ready & apparently agents have figured out that deadlines do indeed make contracts in Dallas. Meaning the team will cave to the highest possible cost.

Would it be better if he was there? Aren't these voluntary? Unless I'm a player on the bubble, I wouldn't go to anything voluntarily.

This was discussed in some detail yesterday on Hangin with the Boys. “I’m all about me Holley” said he was told by Jeff Cavanaugh that the reason they wait so long is due to the fact that they want to keep that money in the bank as long as possible to earn as much interest as possible. When you have almost 18 billion green backs you have a lot of power with banks negotiating and interest earned is in the millions. Jerry has spoken directly to Parson’s earlier this year and Jones has even said that Parson’s has a contract. He just hasn’t signed it yet. So maybe there’s something to this speculation.

They are such bad negotiators that they want the agent to call them. Thinking it costs them more money to call the agent. And they take the same thinking to trades as well.

Because we're stupid.

Next question.

Because our GM thinks he’s playing chess while everyone else plays checkers, but he’s actually playing go fish while everyone else is playing poker.
