can somebody please explain why when we end up losing our star players we NEVER EVER get anything in a trade?

I don’t know Much about how NFL contracts work so I’ll admit that upfront. But it seems to me every year teams like New England or Philadelphia trade away players for third, second or even first round picks. But we always end up just cutting or releasing our guys.

There has to be some other reason then just “our front office is stupid.” So are all the Dez haters satisfied that he was just released?

EDIT: the word GET got left out in title - it meant “get anything for our player?”

Why can't the Cowboys FO ever get something for players they don't want anymore like NE does.

No team wants to trade with Dallas these days. Probably no one wanted to take on Dez' present contract either.

I can guarantee you they made a few phone calls. Who in the world was going to trade even a 6th rounder for Dez and that salary? No one.
Someone will sign him to play with a strong, veteran QB who can ignore him between plays, and he'll be okay. Huge salaries prevent trades unless you're at the top of your game and production.

Our FO is stupid
We have a part time GM

They wait till the player decline is evident and that's too late. Got to trade players when you know their done but everyone else doesn't know.

The org where the player plays should know more about their own players then the other teams do.

There is another thread very similar to this now so if mods want to merge them ...

Can somebody tell me - is there a way to edit the title to your thread after you’ve made it? Didn’t see the option. Thanks

NE is the outlier. Philly getting a #1 for Bradford was dumb luck. they had just traded a ton of picks to move up and draft Wentz. Fortunately for them, Bridgewater shredded his knee and the Minny was desperate and traded for Bradford. I'm guess if Minn had to do it over again they wouldn't.

Most aging stars get cut, not traded.

Perhaps, but let's not kid ourselves - that's the main reason. "The simplest answer is generally the right one"

But rv n though Dez is “aging” and his ability can be debated and will be to no end now. But will there really be a bunch of second and third round receivers picked this year that will beat what Dez will do this year on the whatever team he plays for?

I think one big reason is that the Cowboys front office does so many interviews and talks too much about their plans. Patriots,Eagles, etc. aren't out there broadcasting all their thoughts.

Because they are never willing to part with players that have value relative to their contract. If Dez was only counting $9-10 million against the cap and would only cost another team $6-7 million if they traded for him, then Jerry wouldn't even think about releasing or trading him. Other teams seem willing to trade players while they still have value.

every GM in the league knows our front office is inept, they have a history of it. theres a reason seattle is asking for 2 first round picks for thomas. they know we actually might do it. if we werent interested i doubt theyd come out that strongly.
