Why Do We Start So Slow in These Playoff Games?

Garrett has now coached 3 playoff games and in all of them, we start slow. We can never jump out to a lead like these teams do to us.

Detroit, we got down 14-0 early.
GB the round after, they jump out to a 7-0 lead after we went 3 and out.

And this year, 21-3 after 3 possessions.

Now we do a good job of settling down and not letting the game get away but you are living on the edge doing that. When can we jump out to a 2 score lead and dictate the game early on. It gets annoying to see these slow starts in the postseason. We have almost no room for error after that and every call/non call are now magnified because of it.

I'd love to pounce on a team early and go up 10-0 after a few possessions. Set the tone.

The Cowboys show an over-abundance of caution in the starting quarter or so of playoff games. And late in those same games as well.

That's why we lose more often than not.

You have to point the finger at the HC for that. But I've always wondered if there was more to it than simply an inexperienced or inept HC.

It may be a philosophy imposed on him from higher up. You just never know in Jerry land.

Unfortunately, the truth is beyond our field of vision.

The coward of the year shut his team down at the end of the season even with a bye week coming. It's not surprising they'd start slow after having weeks off.

He prioritized safety over preparation and it's why he should no longer be the head coach.

Well this is a different tune? Your previous position was that Garrett could not be evaluated because it could not be determined the extent to which he was hamstrung by the Jones Boys. The Jones Boys build a roster you like and now you complain about Garrett?

As an old soldier I relate it to the "Garrison Soldier" vs "Field Soldier" comparison.

Garrison Soldier - looks and acts like the most professional soldier you could want. His image should be on recruiting posters. Spit shined boots, pressed uniform, just the picture of a stud soldier. All younger soldiers want to be like him and will follow him anywhere. Normal duty is on the base, 8-5, 5 days a week.

Field Soldier or now Deployed Soldier - crappy conditions to work, long hours, away from home, stress is unbearable. You are either working in the "field" which is the woods or somewhere outside or you are deployed to a combat zone. Some soldiers thrive in these conditions.

Garrett's "Garrison time" is M-Sat. His "Field/Deployed time" is Sunday.

He is the part and shows the part during his "Garrison time", but come Sunday, his "Field/Deployed" time, when the stakes are raised and the stress is unbearable. He cracks. Playoffs are his combat zone. He will crack everytime in this envirnoment. No way do I see him ever see him winning 3 to 4 in a row in the playoffs.

This was actually somewhat of a trend starting around the Pittsburgh game. First half points scored:

Steelers -- 13 (7 points of which was a single 83 yard screen play to Elliot)

Ravens -- 10

Skins -- 17

Vikings -- 7

Giants -- 7

Tampa Bay -- 17

Detroit -- 17

Eagles -- 0 (2 drives with starting lineup)

What happened in the first half against Green Bay was not atypical of a lot of games this season. It is surprising, however, because the GB defense was a mash unit.

because garrett.

I could fully see him watching a practice after time off and going "that should be good enough"

Going down 7-0 is starting slowly?

I'm still so freaking annoyed at this blown opportunity and that's not going away until this time next year, IF we're still around....

Resting our players was the correct decision.

Meanwhile every year we see teams win after resting and win after playing out the string. Every year we see teams lose while resting and lose while playing out the string.

Please go sit in a corner.

Yeah! Crazy right? He sat his starters down in a meaningless week 17 game.

Who has ever heard of such a thing? That's insane!

3 and out to start the game and then allowing GB to easily go down the field for a 7-0 lead is starting slow, yes. That's not a tone you want to keep allowing. In fact, we have allowed easy TDs on the first possession in all 3 playoff games. After each team has had a possession to start these playoff games, we have been trailing. This is all coaching.

Well, Pitt rested their starters for week 17 and they are now one game away from the Super Bowl. It goes deeper than just resting or not resting starters. In 2014, we played that last game with a full roster. Didn't rest anyone. And we still came out flat against Detroit in the wild card win. We still won the game at the end but these starts are annoying.

I disagree. I think we should have been pedal to the metal through week 17.

We had the bye wrapped up. Why did Garrett think we needed a month between playing our starters? He's such a dingus.
