Why do you remain a Cowboys fan?

Loyalty.

Even at a young age I understood the odds of one team in a 26-32 team league going to 12 NFC championship games and 8 Super Bowls in a span of 30 seasons.

Statistically, the "average" NFL team would go to 4 conference championship games and 2 Super Bowls in that 30 year span. The Cowboys tripled the conference championship number and quadrupled the SB number.

I knew it wouldn't last forever and when it was over it would be wrong of me to walk away from them when the fans of so many other teams endured much more difficult circumstances.

However, I feel like I paid that debt years ago. So why do i stay now? Habit, I guess. The star is burnt into my soul. I have had such an emotional investment in them that I can't forsake them. They are a habit.

So I either stay a Cowboys fan or i walk away from the NFL completely and that won't happen. I'm not spending the remaining Sundays of my life in bead shops and craft shows.

My buddy that worked for the Cowboys says he thinks when Jerry dies there will be a legal battle between Stephen and Charlotte.
If that's true, it's possible the NFL and a judge will force the selling of the team to "Split the assets." It will also call into question the stadium ownership, as the city of Arlington itself has a small degree of claim.

Owners, GMs, coaches, players, fans…..all come and go.
The STAR, the history of rising and falling and rising and falling and rising again never changes.

Neither does my fandom.
I’m 68 years old, and I have been a fan of The Dallas Cowboys football team, the Saint Louis Cardinals baseball team, and the New York Knicks basketball team since I was 9 years old. I can like and admire other teams, but they all rise and fall.

The Dallas Cowboys will always be my team…..period!
Yep. It’s the Star. That’s it. America’s team. All the legacy.

What’s the main reason you remain a fan? Are you a “can’t switch teams” guy? Are you a “one day when Jerry’s gone” guy? Are you a “the team is bigger than the owner” guy? Or are you just a “I don’t know anymore” guy?

Every year is more and more depressing, and I am really looking deep to find the answer to this question for myself. Perhaps I can find some better explanations from y'all, because I don’t really know anymore.

Diehard since 77/78, can’t remember the exact year.
I’m a “the team is bigger than the owner” guy. I’ve been a fan for 50 years. I was here long before that narcissistic hic came around and I refuse to let him chase me away.

I will say one thing tho. And I’m going to say this because I’m a little anxious about the start of FA and maybe I had misguided expectations since we were clearing cap room. But this is by far the lowest I have felt about the team. By far. I survived the 80’s when 3-13 teams were the norm. I survived 89 and 1-15. Survived the Campo years. But to me this feels different. I feel like this team is trending downward and I feel the game has passed the Jones by. Jerry is the new Al Davis. I’m pretty cynical right now about the decisions that have been made.

Part of me watching right now is to see what happens if/when we have another season like ‘24. What’s the fallout going to be? Well probably nothing because Jerry and Air Quotes can’t be fired. I feel ‘25 is going to be closer to a 3-5 win season than a 12 win season. Even if, and that’s a big if, they add players through FA and get a decent draft we have a brutal schedule next season and I can see a 5 win season coming. Poor roster and poor HC, overpaid and injury prone QB with a weakened offensive line and 1 WR. On defense we got Micah, Osa, Bland and a bunch of JAGs.

We’re not looking great right now. I do hope if there is any fallout from us winning 3-5 games the fallout is we get pulled from nationally televised games. Maybe the 12 games we lose are by massive blowouts and embarrassing. The best hope we have is when Jerry retires Stephen is so burned out from negative criticism and being embarrassed that he sells the team.

Because I fell in love with the jerseys and the coach when we got our first color TV in '64
30 seasons of excitement and quality followed.
Once Jerry is GONE I hope we return to greatness

Cards on the table: I’m also a Patriots fan. Where I’m from, the idea of a sports league having two conferences is pretty novel and different, so when it came to picking a team, I thought it would be fun to have one AFC and one NFC.

I obviously chose Pats for the quality of their football and their success at the time.
I chose Cowboys for the history, the fan culture and because they were decent to watch at that point.

The football varies; the history doesn’t - and the best bit is that Jerry doesn’t own that, no matter how many ridiculous decisions he may make.

I am a fan of the Dallas Cowboys.

To me being a fan is being a fan of a picture, of an idea you have of your "Fandom-Object". Not of the people that are working there.

I was never a fan of the Cowboys because certain players played for us, not because certain ownership or HC was there.
Sure i am a fan of certain players and when they played for us it made me happy.

But i am usually harsh to players, the owner, the GM, the coaches that play/work for us and drag down that picture, that idea that i have from my Dallas Cowboys.

Right now we have a lot of such people and i dont see it change in short time.

Thats why i think we are going thru the worst period of this once proud franchise.

Will i ever stop to being a fan? IDK. Really. Maybe i will not care about them anymore.
Especially with our (Dallas Cowboys) situation and the way the NFL business changed the game to the worse i sense that i am already near to that point.

To not care anymore to me means: Dont read stuff about them. Dont follow their results and so on.

But i would still consider myself a fan. Even then.

Good question. Habit

Because I've been a fan my whole life. Because of Roger, Tony, Randy, Drew, Tom Landry. Because of Troy, Emmitt, Michael, and Jimmy. Had I been born 25 years later, I'd hate this franchise. I'm getting closer every day.
When I became a fan it was on the heels of Roger's career - never got to see him at his best. My fandom started with the Danny White era, and yet despite that long decade of not getting to the SB, many of my all time favorite Cowboys was from the 80's. If I were to put together a list of my top 25 Cowboys, I could easily name 10 from that period.

I have not. I won’t do mediocre any more. And I hate the Jones morons. Not moneywise but football wise

I am no longer a die hard fan. Been a fan over 40 years. The losing did not make me leave in the late 80's and late 90's. My biggest issue is Jerry runs the organization like a business first and chasing excellence a distant 2nd.

Because you can't really change teams. You can't replace those memories and the bonds you share. It sucks but I don't think there's any viable substitute.

I'll just become more and more apathetic.

What's that old saying? "The flogging will continue until the morale improves." That's why I stuck around. I figure eventually, even by accident, the metaphorical flogging will subside enough, we might stumble into a chip game. It certainly won't be because of the Jones boys. In spite of. As a fan, we all have been flogged for a real long time...at least the ones of us that been here since the beginning. Think about the fans that came AFTER the 90s. They have witnessed 30 years of nothingness. I call it the "big empty." All they know is mediocre play. Sad.
