The Cowboys under McClay and SJ are pretty easy to figure out come draft time. Certain tendencies like not selecting a DT in the first are near guaranteed, yet every year multiple draft experts waste our time by mocking a DT to us in the first.
One tendency the team has is it rarely prioritizes the same position group in back to back drafts. That’s because SJ and McClay have done a pretty good job getting their picks right. So when this year many have us mocked to take a WR with out first or second pick, it’s just another wasted mock.
Stephen Jones has already said that TE is a huge priority and that we need safety help as well. We also drafted 2 WR’s last year and one is currently a starter with the other drawing immense praise before surgery. Why would anyone think we would spend our first pick on another one?
It’s obvious the FO wants to replace the middle of the field production Beasley leaves behind with a TE. This team has never been reliant on slot WR’s. And while Cole was a security blanket for Dak, one could argue that Dak had no choice. An aging Dez and Witten were not clear and better options. With Amari now and Gallup, the importance of a slot WR faded away, we saw that this season.
There is no way in the world anyone can really think a slot WR is more of a need for this team than a S, TE, or DT. When you have your two starting outside WR’s and a young slot/outside guy that you believe in like C.Wilson, you don’t spend your first pick on another WR, and the FO knows that.
Now I’m not saying we wouldn’t pick one in the 4-7th, but I’m having a hard time believing we are going to use our first pick on our 6th biggest need (S,DT,TE, RB/OL, then WR), especially when stud TE and DT’s are going to be available come our first pick.
Stop wasting your time, the hole Cole Beasley will leave is not big enough to spend a 2nd on.
