Why does everyone want to cut Green?

Has anyone researched preseason punt return numbers. I would imagine that preseason averages are higher than regular season averages, so comparing Green's preseason average to last year's regular season average may be misleading.

Haven't seen those figures, but I think it was posted earlier in the thread he was 10th among returners in his performance. Definately not what I would call elite, but obviously top 1/3 in the league if that ranking is accurate.

You can't carry a guy for 4 plays a game on average.

But returning punts was in fact the reason he was drafted, and in the 4th round no less. He's been mediocre but that's still an upgrade over last year IMO. He hasn't fumbled at least. I think the Green decision may well be the very last one made. I'm against the grain on this one but I haven't punched his bus ticket quite yet.

That's why Green should go to the practice squad. He would easily clear waivers....let him develop there. If he sticks on the roster, there are just too many quality players that shouldn't be sacrificed.

No, special teams guys are the least likely to clear waivers because they don't need to learn a new system.

Don't be surprised if Green's fate is directly tied to Vanderjagt's health. If Vandy does a solid job Thursday in both KO's and FG's, Parcells may opt to keep 6 receivers, including Green. If he has to keep Suisham, Green may be headed back to the bayou.

Green has not shown me anything special. He is quick but small and it seems those players are common enough.

We'll see if he showed BP anything special or not.

I'd love to get him to a practice squad but if he is a punt returner he needs to do something else. Be it on ST coverages or something. You can't carry a guy for 4 plays a game on average.

who you keep one season has nothing to do with who you keep the next season. we kept z.smith because we had so little talent that we did'nt have to cut any good players. we are getting enough talent that you can't keep a player on the active roster who is just gonna do one thing. on top of that having to keep an extra kicker, and some extra depth on the oline. i like green and i think with a year on the p.s. he can make this team next year. but i only see us keeping 5 wr's, if you keep green that means cutting rector or hurd who are both much better wr's than green. it';s a numbers game and the numbers are not in his favor. why are some many opposed to letting the guy spend a year on the p.s. and learn the game. he has very little experience as a wr, and it';s not like there is much chance of him not clearing waivers

I'm sure some of it was the weight issue he had last May, but they made it sound like the kid has been trying Parcells' patience.

I think poor Skyler is reaping some of the angst some fans feel about the very notion of drafting for specials...much as we know how special teams comprise (in Bill's world and words) "a full one third of the game", on draft day few want to hear a 4th round pick went on a guy who was intentionally drafted to improve special team play..even if he is the return specialist. I

I know I grit my teeth at the very idea, even tho I realize sometimes those roles decide the fate of the team. Then there is the frustration of seeing players who CAN play a position released because they are not also providing good specials team play.

When in addition to that, the player hasn't looked too savvy, well...he's not going to be overly loved. Let us see something, one incredible cut back, one hurdling leap, one instant decision that spells great instincts....and Green will grow his supporters. A player drafted to be electric just can't afford to look mundane.

The haplessness can be assessed as growing pains, the lack of something 'special' (even from the get-go) feels unforgivable. Even Woody Dantzler gave us a whiff of 'that'.

But actually, I took a shine to this kid this summer - he's engaging - and I hope he survives....on the other hand, the thought of losing "Cooper" (sic) or god forbid Rector is much more horrifying.

I don't think there's a single Cowboys fan here that "Wants" him to be cut. We just DON'T want his spot to be GIVEN to him just cuz he's a draft pick.

What difference does it make if the rookie WR we keep was drafte or not, as long as he looks like he could be something? Why do we HAVE to keep Green just cuz he was drafted? You willing to cut Sam Hurd to keep Green? You willing to cut Rector to keep Green?


Green has to earn his star just like the undrafted guys. When you keep players on the roster (and release others) just cuz of where they were drafted, you end up with teams equal in talent to those teams Dave Campo was coaching before Parcells got here.

As long as keeping Green does not result in Rector or Hurd getting cut, I don't mind him having more time to develop. Hopefully we end up keeping 6 WRs and TO and Crayton get back on the field soon.

I'd like to see him justify his draft status. So far he hasn't shown much. He's looked rather average and hasn't shown any moves or speed.

He kept Zuriel Smith for a season. Why not keep Green at least until the final cut down? He could light it up on Thursday.

He made one very bad play on fielding the punt inside the 10. Looked like he learned his lesson on that play and didn't field the others that ended up getting great bounces.

On that kickoff return that did not reach the 20. There was a pile of players in his way. He was trying to run behind his wedge and they moved no one out of the way. I did think he had room to cut it outside and gain maybe five more yards, but the play was designed for a middle return. Probably the "Julius Jones Syndrome" of doing what Parcells says instead of trusting your instincts.

Zuriel returned a punt for a TD in the preseason.
