Why does Texas A&M suck?

I mean they are the second biggest University in the state of Texas. They have a storied history and tons of tradition. They are located between Houston and Dallas, as well as near the Louisiana border. You would think they would recruit better. Of course, even when they do recruit quality players, the coaches dont put them in the proper positions to be successful on the field.

I am just wondering why teams like Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St. Texas Tech, TCU, and LSU can be so competitive, and yet year in and year out over the last decade or so, the Aggies have just been sitting in the corner twiddling their thumbs.

It makes no sense to me that they cannot recruit better and even obtain better coaches. However, ever since they canned Slocum, they have been a program stuck in quicksand. Fran and Sherman suck and are an embarrassment to the program and the school.

Growing up, the Aggies were known for their stifling defense, "The Wrecking Crew".....but since they got rid of Slocum, their defense is putrid at best. Their special teams has fallen off the face of the earth. No longer do they effectively run the option or power rushing attack.

Now I hate the Aggies, so it is kind of nice to see them struggling and looking like garbage.....however, as a lifelong Texan, it would be nice to see A&M get strong again, as to keep our top Texas Prep stars closer to home, instead of leaving to Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisana, etc. Also, it would make the UT/A&M game that much more exciting.

I do know if I were an Aggie alum, I would be pressuring and hounding the Football Program to get its act together.

Mack Brown and Bob Stoops is why A&M sucks right now. That period from 84-94 was the greatest period in Aggie history. Sadly for them, it was the only great period for the Aggie program. It was never really a great program. They have basically returned to where they should be. But that's still no excuse. A&M has no business going 4-7 or losing games like 77-0. They have the potential but they've made bad hires over the past few years.

I think they are actually showing signs of life this year.


Turning McGee into a option QB wasn't the best of ideas either.

With the amount of athletes in Texas and going to the spread offense I think they will be on Oklahoma States level soon enough.

I would probably disagree with this. In 1917 - 1919 the Aggies were very strong. In fact, I believe the 1919 team went unbeaten and unscored upon. Long time ago but they were really good. The 39 time was also a National Championship team.

yes it is necessary. after the A&M loss yesterday to Okie St. I am curious as to why they seem to be a lower level Big 12 team year in and year out.....considering all that I stated in the original post.

BTW, this has nothing to do with UT or OU other than those two seem to be better at recruiting and hiring quality coaching personnel.

BTW, I have no issues with Baylor. It is a class school. I like Baylor. They won a National Championship in women's basketball a few years ago, something very positive for the Big 12. Sofia Young of the San Antonio Silver Stars was on that team.

to OP i think the reason is that A&M is bad is because the school is pigion holed. it is really rich in tradition but the school doesnt offer much outside of its specialty in curriculum and there is not much outside of drinking to do there which is a turn off to parents. it also has a rep for the type of close minded people that go there which i would think could be a turn off to recruits.
