Why don't we ever try to block a punt?

seriously..........why? it is a major momentum builder in big games.

when was the last time we blocked a punt in a regular season game?

issac holt is the last one i remember.

I would imagine its due to BPs style of play. He wants a methodical, win field position type of approach and a roughing the kicker penalty would be too big of a risk for him. I know we did it when Johnson was here but his approach towards winning, as we all know, was much different. A lot more high stakes gambling going on for him. BP would rather approach a game like a python, just slowly squeezing and squeezing until he chokes you out.

Because the reward is not worth the risk. Too many times, it results in Roughing when they miss.

outstanding reply..

i agree with your analogy..

i still think newman could get to one though..

I think we do

how many times do you see a team come close to blocking a plunt, I mean a near-miss? I saw the Saints block 2 Falcon punts, but other than that, I haven't seen very close attempts at blocking Ps

I've never looked at a punt block stat but it has to be an ungodly low %. Certain places on the field make it an easier call but typically the extra 10-15 yards of net yards are a better bet.

According the Cowboys Official Weekly, Marcus Steele blocked a punt against SF on December 8, 2002 and Brandon Noble blocked a FG against NYFG on December 17, 2000. Those are the last kicks the Cowboys blocked.

didn't he have a 'k' in his 1st name? and I remember him, he was a 3rd round pick, pretty good in college, but for whatever reason, he didn't work out

There might've been a K in his name, I'm not sure. The publication spelled it with a C. And yeah he was highly regarded coming out of college, but never panned out.

the better question should be is why is Newman still returning punts? I'm always uneasy when he's out there. In my opinion, he is still far too valuable to be returning punts. Even if he never suffers a hit like in the Colts game, I still think the reward isn't worth the risk.

The injury factor makes me uneasy, and if he had just signaled for the fair catch which was the obvious thing to do in that punt vs. the Colts he wouldn't have been pasted, but he has great quickness and speed and has been one missed tackle away from taking it to the house a few times this season.

I think the more he returns punts and gets a feel for it he can be deadly in that situation. I'm still waiting for him to bust a big return for a TD this year. He just needs to improve his reactionary skills and field vision. Let's not forget TNew has 4.3 speed.
