Why Don't We Run The ZONE BLITZ?

We run the 3-4..wouldn't it make sense to zone blitz occasionally?

Cuz it's a stupid gimmick D that Zimmer is unfamiliar with.

I'd rather beat someone straight up then rely on this type of silliness. Let the Steelers keep their Zone Blitz.

Great question... we don't seem to disguise much granted our "jail break" blitzing was highly effective last night. Even if not a zone blitz I think we need to be a little bit more creative. Pitt runs a beautiful blitz with their two 3-4 ILB where they cross and the second coming in usually has a free shot. Still, I think Zimmy is doing a good job thus far.

yeah.

we really need to mix something up.

I dont need to see Ware being blocked by the LT EVERY time. I want to see him coming untouched.

The zone blitz one or two times a game would be HUGE!

Honestly, I'm not sure I want to see Ferguson drop back into coverage. Nor Canty, nor Spears.

It's not their strengths. Play to our strengths, and no gimmicks.

Leave the coverage to the LB's. That's what they're there for.

LEAVE THE COVERAGE TO ELLIS who is a DL? But not to Canty or Spears?

Come on, think about it.

Nobody is saying to run it every play.

but one or two times a game would be VERY WISE!!!!

Ask the Eagles about a blitz. Dawkins came untouched and yet the Giants score.

Zone Blitz is a risk. Any Blitz is a risk. If you can get pressure with 4 guys, why would you take the risk? I think you will see more stuff show up on the defensive side of the ball once guys start becoming more and more comfortable in the 34. Honestly, it's not like you just step out there and start playing a 34. It takes years for players to learn a defense in and out. The Steelers themselves probably played three years of 34 before they ever started zone blitzing. It all takes time.

BTW, the way we used Ware on the Motion Blitz was very nice and totally unexpected from the Red Skinz. He pretty much came clean on that play. That was a nice job of hidding what we were doing and using Ware's abilities to the best of our advantage. We're slowely doing some things out there.

The steelers have always run the 3-4. I dunno that they have ever run the 4-3 in their history.

if you READ my posts I have said run it 1 or 2 times a game!

LMAO

Yes but that kind of defense you have to commit to. You just don't throw it out there 1 or 2 times a game. Then it would not be effective. The zone blitz is to confuse th qb and line by not knowing where the pressure is coming from. In that D you set up the pressure again by commiting to it.

Good Lord. How old are you?

Young enough that I'm probably going to get destroyed for that comment.:D

LOL.....

OK, the Steelers were not always a 34 defense. I don't follow the Steelers religiously but if memory serves, the Steelers went to the 34 in the early 90s. The first few seasons, they actually played both 34 and 43. It took some time for them to actually learn the system in and out. Also took time to aquire the right players for the scheme.

I read your comment and was dumb founded by it. I thought to myself, "Lord, are you that old?"

:laugh2:

As I'm sure you know but maybe just didn't register with you, at one time, the Steelers had one of the best front fours in the History of Pro Football. There Steel Curtain Teams were legendary. Back in those days, that 4-3 was the best defense many had ever seen.

Joe Green, LC Greenwood, Dwight White, Steve Furness (I believe) up front with Robin Cole, Jack Ham and Jack Lambert at LB. Mel Blont, Donnie Shell, Mike Wagner and Ron Johnson in the backfield.

I think Banazak, Toews, Gary Dunn and a guy named Tony Dungy were the guys off the bench. That was a great 43 defense.
