Why don't we throw deep until the second half?

While watching the game and talking to folks on twitter this female fan made this comment and after my initial laughter I thought about it and its true. Since Garrett LOVE to throw why don't we go deep more in the first half?

We know Dez and Miles can catch the long ball and with NFL rules its 50/50 to get flag...why is this tactic not used more cowboyszone?

How many plays comes in that is a designed deep ball but Romo has to throw to a check down or WR on shorter rout due to pressure he is trying to get away from?

Before you can claim something wouldn't it be nice to know what plays were actually being called to start with?

Garrett plays not to lose until he is forced to open up the game, its his MO from last season and nothing has changed. Its the reason why we barely score any points in the first quarter and are always playing catch up.

It's most every NFL head coach's MO. And considering our OL, you have to understand the need to design most of the passing offense to have the ball out of Romo's hand very quick.

Week to week, I would like to see a much more aggressive gameplan.

Go for it on most 4th downs between the 50 and 33 yards lines. When in FG range, take the FG. But if it's a reasonable distance, less than 10 yards, go for it on the other side of the 50.

In most game situations, ball possesion is most valuable than 25-35 yards of field position. At least it is if your offense is more capable than your defense and that's the case with us right now.

I'm not sure we don't, but this sounds like a nice thing to criticize, anyway.

Best measure I can think of would be Sturm's passing charts for each game. Paging through them, I'm not seeing any unexplainable patterns:

CIN
PHI
WAS
CLE

There aren't a ton of long blue lines. There are games, like WAS, where we were obviously taking more chances because we were down by so much. And, of course, we should also ask whether we want this team taking a lot of slow-developing low-percentage passes downfield in the first place. What we're doing is winning games, after all.

Lull our opponents into a false sense of security.

agreed

we consistently seem to come out with a poor game plan and then have to 'adjust' at half time

And then, recently, win. And then complain that we didn't like the way we won the game.

I have no idea whether or not we throw deep more later than earlier, I assume we b/c we are catching up.

The one fact many seem to forget or overlook, however, is that it requires much more time to throw deep. Given our o-line, the team is basically making the choice to place Romo more at risk if we design deeper routes more often. I think we are actually doing more of it lately.

It's just up to him to dodge the 2-3 d-lineman that are surely closing in on him in 1-2 seconds, and find a way to throw deep.

or lose and make excuses, per usual

I'm not sure "good in game adjustments" explains why Dallas doesn't do something in the first half.

What are they adjusting to?

You aren't suggesting it takes the coaches an entire half to figure out that the opponent is playing in a manner that makes them susceptible to the deep pass?

It might explain why Dallas is more successful at something in the 2nd half but it doesn't explain why they don't do something in the first half.

4 out of 5 recently. 4 out of 5. Nobody's losing and making excuses recently. But we do have fans complaining about the nature of the slow starts, the game planning, and the adjustments in the wins. Just take a look at the thread.

3rd quarter is pretty lousy as well.

There's a Romo interview somewhere in here that addresses this question. Basically alluding to adjustments and having a good idea what the defenses are doing by the time second half rolls around.

Garrett plays too conservative until we fall behind. Then Romo gets to improvise and take some shots downfield. In today's NFL it is better to take your shots early and spread out the defense, but Garrett still thinks it's the 90's and establishing the run is the only way to open up the defense. It's very hard for the Cowboys to sustain long drives because of the blocking problems and self inflicted penalties. To me punts are just turnovers with a little better field position.

I agree with you, its actually why I semi-hate watching games at home (when your at the stadium) you can SEE routes develop you can see the pass coverage. something your not able to see in front of the tv.
