Why don't we use more max protect?

I ask the all knowledgable football people on here.

I would like football answers, not options where the person thinks their opinion is fact.

Just want football Strategy answers.
Thanks

So, my question is: why don't we use more max protect and send out one or to two receivers and see what we can do? Show what our QB and receivers can really do? Perhaps improve in the process?

Good question. It's not like we don't have players that can win those one on one battles on the outside if we keep everyone in to pass protect. I actually like Escobar one on one along with Dez because of his size and superior hands.

When they line up for a full blitz we should be running the ball down their throats anyway - at least this last game when the down and distance and our lack of success should have dictated that.

Play action, screen passes, draws, etc... Are all things that can be used to keep the D off balance and guessing rather than letting them pin their ears back with a beeline to the QB.

The non-strategy thought is we were cocky and thought we could just work around it.

If we would have held Witten out vs. calling him in to block and screened the RB in the flats, they would have stopped blitzing when they were being gashed by 20 yard pickups.

Doesn't matter now - it's another week and another game.

Quarterbacks generally prefer more receivers to more protectors. Doesn't mean they're right, but they do.

The question is do they just readjust the blitz to add in the player that was designated to cover the TE that is now staying in to protect? If yes then you're basically in the same position you were before you kept the TE in, but now with one less option in the pass pattern.

I'm not sure there's a correct answer to the question, other then execute. The receivers need to get open and catch the ball when thrown their way, regardless of the protection.

You may see three TE sets today with Hanna on the field along with Witten, Dez and Escobar. I think this will be a set you can run and pass from...but offers max protection...you can also do bubble screens if you put four or five WRs on the field, but I don't think we will see this happen too often as it's not a set that lends to clear running lanes.

I thought the blocking had been pretty good until last game. I think Garrett's old slowness to adjust in-game just reared it's ugly head once more, they need to be more flexible to what's happening in a game instead of waiting till halftime or after the game to make adjustments.

Max protect schemes leave one immediate receiver to go out and delayed receivers in TEs and RBs. So you are telling the defense you are either going to run, you are going to throw to one receiver or you are hopeful of getting a receiver out in coverage before the QB is pressured or sacked.

There is really no excuse for the Cowboys not to have used more protection on third down esp with our run ability. Keep in mind however that if you can break the blitz you are almost guaranteed a big play perhaps a TD. Also, you are making the defense back off of you and play more balanced. That puts you back into your normal offense or even in a more favorable area.

Rob Ryan used to: 1) blitz 2) show blitz and back off. We were beaten so often doing that, we should have a model for how to beat it.

No team runs max protect a high percentage of the time.

The problems in the Skins game were mostly about the routes being to long and slow to develop. They needed to go to more quick throws with shorter routes and run the ball more. Going Max Protect is a low percentage of success option.

Less receivers= less responsibilities for DB's. More receivers= more guys DB'S have to be accountable for. Of course the more receivers you send out to routes, the less blockers you have.

It's easier to cover 1-2 receivers, than it is to cover 4-5
