Why even have two first round picks?

Every year we get excited about having two firsts, then every year we trade down and move the first rounder to the next season. Why have them if we dont use them. We need to win now, use the two firsts NOW.

Exactly. Stockpiling picks isn't a bad thing. Using them when the value isn't there, is.

Exactly, there might be that one year that one player is avaliable and you have to move up to get him or a couple players slide and you get 2 of your top 30 players. So many reasons to keep the trend going if you have the chance until the opportunity presents itself to spend them.

Wait, wait

so what you're saying is,

instead of trading one of two first round pick to get another in the next draft, you'd rather pay two players 1st round money that probably aren't gonna start?

You are a GENIUS!!!!

The idea behind two firsts is flexibility, first and foremost. If they don't like what this year offers and chooses to push the option of two 1sts to next year, I don't see what the problem is.

I just think it is a mistake to keep pushing these back. We are a good team now. We need to win now. Im not saying reach for someone who isnt worthy, but why not take two good players in the first instead of trading down all of the time.

Because you take two good players, that will not be starting, and you have to worry about grasping the playbook, making the transistion, even being an impact.

You keep getting that first, then maybe you find yourself at the top of the draft for a guy like Mcfadden

Well there's a little method to the madness. Many teams have only 20-25 players graded as having 1st round talent on their board. I believe the Cowboys said they have 21 this year.

Now, do you take a guy at #22 (or #28) with a 2nd round grade just for the sake of drafting someone? Or do you hedge your bets and gamble for better position next year? We don't have any GLARING needs that would force us to use the pick this year. So I could understand pushing it off. I'm not saying we will, but I understand it.

That sounds like a good plan.

The reason you trade down one of the picks is two fold:

1. Simply put - to save money and

2. Value - You don't want to over draft by taking someone to early.

That is why we traded down last year only to trade back up to get Spencer. We got the guy we wanted, picked up a first rounder this year and saved money.

That is just being smart and working the draft like you should.

If the Cowboys had a top 5 pick, or the capability to move up to the top 5, this question would not even be posed.

Browns... grrrrrrr.

When you can get an early 2 and next years first I don't see how anyone could complain.

If we give up our 22nd pick hopefully we can get a 1st and 2nd if we give up our 28 hopefully we can get a 1st and 3rd/4th. It probably depends on the player and value but I would like any of those trades. That's of course if there is bidders.

The last time we had two firsts, we used both of them.
