Why I believe Hamilton got cut

Just watched the MIA game again and compared both of them and came away with these thoughts:

Running game:

- When Hamilton was tasked with the backside contain on running plays he didn't hustle at all in pursuit of the ball carrier. This was most apparent on the outside zone plays that MIA ran where the POA was opposite his side. On these type of plays he should be able to get parallel with the LOS and pursue from the backside and be able to make the tackle from behind if the ball carrier is slow hitting the holes.

- Plays that were run at him he had a hard time getting of the blocks and keeping gap control. I've seen this same story from him throughout preseason. As a OLB you still have to be able to play the run and right now Hamilton can't do that. The NFL is much different that Praire View and that was very apparent throughout the preseason.

- He's not quick enough to diagnose run games. On one play where the entire OL blocks to the right, he takes an outside step to the opposite direction while his line mates follow the flow of the blocking to the right. This causes him to immediately take himself out of the play. This is the tell tale sign that the guy is all about getting to the QB and not keeping lane discipline. For a UDFA that's not the ticket to make the 53.

Passing Game:

- In the Miami game he wasn't very impressive pass rushing either. He tried to run around blocks too often. At one point he even tried to run around a TE rather than take the block head on. This led to him taking longer paths to get to the QB and he became ineffective. He still struggled when he took on blockers so he may have hit that proverbial "rookie wall" where he needs to figure out how to use his hands better. He also has this stutter step that he needs to get rid of because that is also part of the problem as well. I'm sure he's been coached to not do that but he reverted to that a few times in the game.

- As the game wore on he really got gassed. He got slower each qtr to the point where he just looked really bad at times. I thought Atkins did a lot better job in defending the run/pass than Hamilton. Atkins really showed a very nice burst off the ball and fought through his blocks better than Hamilton.

- During one pass set Hamilton got chipped by the FB and got knocked to the ground.

Overall I just didn't see that same player that we saw in the youtube video of him. He took on better talent and guys that have strength and speed and he looked pretty average. If he makes the PS that would be a plus for him but at this point I don't care if he does or not. At this point Atkins offers more to the team on the 53 or PS than Hamilton does. I wouldn't mind both of them on the PS but if I had to choose I'd take Atkins.

Atkins is a 4 year vet who is no PS eligible. Why do people keep thinking he is a rookie?

In part because he looked a bit like a college junior on the field this preseason. perhaps.

I was in the process of making a farewell vid of his pressures from this preseason, but got distracted along the way and won't be able to get to it now. I was working backwards, so these are out of order. Found four from the Miami game (didn't get to the 1st quarter) where he beats the blocker quickly in position to cause troubles if the QB didn't get rid of the ball after hitting their drop or soon after.

Bluestang: thanks for the thought-provoking breakdown re: Hamilton's play. Provided some good, scout-like insight to the topic. Makes me feel a bit better about why the Cowboys likely decided to cut him. Appears he's a "Not Ready for Prime Time" Player, by the look of what he has to offer just now.

Hopefully he somehow passes through waivers and makes it to our PS so he can be groomed and developed into a more complete player. Love his raw talent, but I understand the "one trick pony" viewpoint.

Hairic: thank you for the effort in working to put together edited video of Hamilton's work in the MIA game and posting it here to add to the discussion. I appreciate having had it to watch while considering what Bluestang had offered in his post.

Good stuff, guys. :)

hamilton is a solid prospect but he lacks polish.

i am very hopeful he makes the PS. he is an explosive athlete that needs to continue to develop.

we were extremely deep at lb this year.

I spend so much time on this site because there are so many great posters that provide an insight into the game that I can't get anywhere else. It is nice to start the day reading a civilized discussion based on facts!

Thank you. Man, guys like you make this board great. Wish I had the time to look at the details as you do - but, you really provide a service to guys like me that simply can't or don't...

I was very hopeful for Hamilton based upon everything I read here on the Zone and the little few PS games I was able to see from the NE.

Of course, I understand you are not in the room with the coaches as they deliberate over these matters. But, your analysis makes a lot of sense.

Nice job.

I hope we see Hamilton on the PS but right now I'm more focused and concerned with the guys who made the team not those who did not make it.

Sooo you're saying there's a chance.. (he makes the practice squad)

Great points. I'll summarize all this in an even shorter paragraph (not saying you wrote too much or anything like that) - we have a more polished version of Hamilton already on the roster. His name is Victor Butler.

He got cut because he's nowhere near good enough to play in the NFL.

Period.

Against Bethune Cookman and Howard, perhaps.

Against the NFL, he's barely a speed bump.

He played very well against Oakland and San Diego, had at least three pressures in both games.

Remember...as fans we only see about 1/10th of what these guys do...the other 9/10ths we have no clue about and are guessing.

Bluestang did a nice breakdown above of some of the things you can see in the games, and I did hear whispers from somewhere that Hamilton seemed to be struggling with the playbook and the effort wasn't always consistent.

I think a lot of us fell in love with the pass rushing ability but even that wasn't great....compared with Butler and even Atkins he wasn't bringing it as often and that doesn't even consider Wilbur, who the beat reporters seemed to all like in practice action.

"Almost" Adrian?

Regardless of the veracity, its refreshing to read a well thought out, non-emotional analysis that isn't merely an emotional rant/reaction from an arm chair QB, it would be great if more posts could take this tack

nice work

We've got guys on this roster who are no-trick pony's. Andre Holmes? Are you kidding me? The guy is a terrible receiver. Matt Johnson? Did nothing in mini camp, OTA's, training camp, preseason, injured like he was in college --- but we're banking on those two over a guy who has actually proven he can get after the QB?

I don't care if he can't play the run. He gets after the QB and if you can use him to do that 7 or 8 times a game on 3rd down, that's pretty damn valuable. I mean, we kept a guy last year who couldn't do anything but kickoff. You're telling me we can't find a spot for a situational pass rusher?

Not when they already have two players on the roster that are "situational pass rushers", in Butler and Wilber. Hamilton has great potential, but is raw, and needs some seasoning. I hope he makes the practice squad.
