We went into last season thinking that we had a legitimate SB contending team.
We vastly under-performed last season so now many who were sure we were going to be awesome last year are freaking out now like we will be lucky to win 5 games.
There were many valid excuses for last years debacle which could be rectified simply by the players/coaches doing their jobs, and plugging in a player or two to help solidify certain positions.
No one in this years FA crop stands out as a must have and justifies overpaying.
Will we return to playoff form this season, maybe. Will we repeat last seasons performance, maybe. I think we are closer to the former than the latter.

We're struggling and our QB is on a rookie 4th round deal.

Let that sink in. Even taking into account Romo dead $$$$ we're still 10m below what teams are paying their QB.

And we have no maneuverability despite what people continuously preach on here

I'm not jumping off a cliff. Why? Because this abject performance from the front office is par for the 22 year long course...

This is why im somewhat freaking out. we need more than a player or two. We need better depth at tackle, guard, LB, RB, and DT. The only person on this team last year that actually was somewhat capable of being the "next man up" just went to KC for 9 mil a year. i don't think the draft can solve all of these problems.

If they were stupid enough, which you are advocating for, they could sign anyone they wanted. Thankfully, they aren't stupid enough.

I don't think I'll be freaking out no matter what - it's beyond my control. But I agree with the OP that there isn't a reason to treat things as desperate. There definitely are real concerns - how Dak develops, O-Line, middle of defense, etc, but the team isn't falling off a cliff the way some seem to feel. The Eagles are clearly going to be the favorite in the division going into the season, as they should be, but even if the Cowboys didn't make a move I still think they are the next best team, and with even a slight improvement they could be back in the playoffs.

We had Hitchens last season and we had the record we had. It will be hard to replace his production no doubt but there isn't any I see worth overpaying for as his replacement. Likewise for other positions in which we have depth issues.

30 of 32 teams have made moves to better themselves.

One of the two teams that hasn’t made moves, has an elite QB, HB, WR and solid defense and makes the playoffs yearly.

The other is ... well us

We won't know if they've improved their teams until after the Season begins. If the standard holds, many will result in not so great returns.

No reason to freak out at all. You may not like the plan but it's obvious the FO has a plan and are sticking to it. Now the plan my suck, that is up for debate but it is still better than not having a plan or direction. They have placed a value on each position and will not stray from their idea of how to build the team. After years of being in cap trouble from reckless acquisitions and finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel, people just want to throw it all away so they be active on the first day of FA and make signings just to make them. I like Hitchens.. I thought he was really good but not 9 million good. The WR money being thrown around is off the charts stupid, so very happy we passed on those guys. There is still plenty of time left to make acquisitions that help this team. Some act like it is a 48 hour window. Thinking about it, a 48 hour window to sign FA would be kinda fun :)

We have a great season! Then follow it up by unloading talented players that next offseason and then plugging in only scraps and a draft pick or two

Instead of making an "honest effort" at getting serious talent in to help get over the hump

People that freak out over a sport's team need to attach their egos to something more important. Won't happen, but it would be a good idea.

No sense freaking out about that which is expected. We don't play high stakes free agency. We're still in a bad cap situation. Losing hitch will hurt. Dez still a question mark. Only good news is we've drafted well lately. Hope that continues.

The optimism is nice but this post is repeated almost every offseason.

This team has real holes that could be filled with a few solid FAs. So the notion that we don’t need FA is an oft repeated defense of the organization that isn’t grounded in reality.

It becomes painfully obvious with each offseason that the Jones’ have neither the capacity or the aggressiveness to build an elite roster.

From my experience, it's best to freak out early, just in case, so you don't end up regretting it earlier.

That way, when people say you should have expected the Cowboys to move slowly at the start of free agency becasue they do it EVERY SINGLE YEAR UNDER JASON GARRETT, you can just say they should stop being homers and defending Jerry and that you just have higher expectations for your team than they do and don't tolerate mediocrity. That lets you get in a little smugness, which is fun, and there's no downside unless you care about losing your **** for no reason each and every offseason like clockwork.

This is the same strategy we employed prior to winning the division in 14 and 16.

Cue the “Well, you’re only satisfied with getting to the divisional round” posts.

Damn those stupid patriots and eagles for signing players.. ..

You guys keep bringing up the Patriots who are one of the best organizations of all time and the Eagirls who have shown you 1 year of looking like a solid team. Those are the two teams you guys hang your hat on. Not perennial playoff teams like the Packers(when Aaron is healthy) or Steelers.
