Why Is Garrett Even a Discussion?

I realize before I post this that there will be many who disagree with my view. That is fine, you can make your argument here as well. But I'm really amazed that both in the media, and among fans, there is even a discussion as to whether Garrett should be the head coach next season, after these 6 games.

When this team was 1-7 there was no way that ANYONE envisioned winning some of the games we have won (in New York), or playing to the level we have played at times (without Roy's fumble we beat the Saints), or winning 4 of the next 6 games.

Garrett was given a backup QB, the loss of the most athletic receiver we have, who was just emerging (Bryant), and our #2 or 3 receiver (Roy), and since then has lost even more players on both sides of the ball.

We have seen this team play hard, play smarter (not perfectly, but greatly improved), and seem to REALLY believe in Garrett.

Garrett is young, super organized, gives attention to detailed preparation, and represents the organization well. A young, smart, skillful guy who could handle the job for a LONG TIME.

What would you want instead?

*A retread? - Someone might say, well there are Super Bowl caliber coaches out there. (Cowher, Gruden, for example).

But honestly. Didn't it take those guys time to win in their situations? And looking at Gruden, his teams always seemed to regress. I mean the guy HAS been fired hasn't he? Cowher won ONE Super Bowl, and he produced a lot of average teams too.

I would rather have OUR OWN guy. A guy with a bright future and lots of potential.

In my opinion, if Dallas looks elsewhere we will live to regret it.

Your thoughts?

Whether he's the best choice or not, it would make absolutely no sense given the context to not give him the job.

He has been just masterful in his playcalling with Kitna. I just hope he doesn't revert next year when Tony his healthy.

I agree as well. I want to see Garrett back in 2011 (assuming a lock out does not happen).

I don't think there is any actual discussion. Just media filling time talking about this foregone conclusion.

I am open to alternatives besides Garrett. His play calling has left alot to be desired over the years and as far as I am concerned deserves his share of the blame for this teams failings. The win over the Giants was a quality win, the rest not so much.

Its just something to talk about for Media I guess. Till the job is given to Garrett, that discussion will continue. And some in fandom, always look at something that is not here. Grass is greener for them on other side always.

I know quite a few people on this very board were very happy to get rid of Payton. We all know how correct they were.... Same didn't think highly of Sparano either ( not that he has done so great in Miami, but cleary he is hamstrung by QB).

So some fans will never be happy if Garrett is hired. But it seems like a done deal that Garrett will be named HC. But Jerry will interview candidates, he has to do that. In a way, sometimes interview process is also a pick the brains type of deal too.

So Jerry might learn a thing or two about how to do things differently, that work.

:lmao2: I knew there were few :D

I agree he's probably the guy in the long run for some reason...but he really hasn't fixed anything with this team so far.

The defense is still putrid.
Still blown assignments.
Can't gain a yard running the ball.
Can't play a full 60 min.

I actually like JG, but he hasn't turned this team into a juggernaught. We've beat Det and Was who are two of the worst teams in football, got a couple of breaks to beat the Gints, and lost to NO and Philly who are the only two good teams we've played IMO.

Maybe he's taken them from bad to average, but with this much talent I'm not all that impressed.

Dude, he was handed a 1-7 team. What exactly were you expecting? We've been competitive in every single game he's coached and won four of them.

All this may be true, but are you remembering how they looked through the first 8 games of the season? This looks like a completely different team. Did any of us think a turnaround like this would have been possible? You have to give credit where credit is due. JG is doing a great job.

If anything, Cowboys football is watchable again.

I wonder if anyone is not clear on my feelings on this matter?

Probably not. I have been rather opinionated and hard headed on the subject.

We were competitive against everyone but GB under Wade, and that was when the players had totally given up.

I just don't see how we are that different. Less mental mistakes and playing hard - sure. But I do, and will always, attribute that to the players.

Is JG doing a good job, I think so. But to think that he should be guaranteed the job is a stretch imo.

exactly didnt nobody think that Garrett will be 4-2 (almost 5-1 if it wasn't for the Roy fumble but thats football so) as a coach heading into the toughest part of our schedule without or star QB and taken over a 1-7 football team.

We are a good defense and a offensive lineman or two away from being serious contenders.

Yeah. You're on your own with that whole 'bring Wade back' idea man.

i would at least would have enjoyed the fact at a chance to blow this whole organization up and start a new. New HC all the way down to Sherman being the only hold out. I was hoping for a new scouting department and really shake this up.

What scares me if Jason keeps some of these coaches out of personal feelings instead of when they come up to him and ask if they are still employeed, he whips out the video of their squad and asks :what do you think?"

I really really hope Garrett is the coach of the future, in my worst case scenario, we are regretting this next year.

Cut me some slack AC. I just got out of prison and hadn't had a drink in a long time. I tied one on.

Garrett has done a great job with the offense and if we had any sort of a defense we'd be 6-0 under him.

He has the respect of the players and if we can find a great D coordinator along with a great defensive draft we should be back on the SB track.

I am trying really hard to hold my tongue here, but Against Jags and Giants Cowboys were competetive for you? What kind of TV do you have or maybe eyes? Some that are colored to look the way you want to look?

Giants game D was absolutely pathetic. O wasn't that bad considering Tony went down. Against Jags, both O and D were absolutely pathetic. You are saying they were competitive. Give me a freaking break!

Garrett should be the coach next year.

Games like today, Wade would have lost. It seems that when things start going badly now, that Garrett actually gives the players confidence to play through it and come out with the win.

Garrett is a Cowboy. I like it.
