I don't get why the team signed Nate Livings over Holland. Holland was the teams second best on the line. Think PFF ranked him the 16th overall guard. That's pretty darn good

What PFF fails to measure is a) he was so fat and out of shape that we cut him and b) that he always gets hurt

You have to be kidding... Holland our best G, what a joke... G is one of the biggest needs for this team...

Ummm... did you watch? I didn't say the team shouldn't upgrade. But he was the teams best interior lineman last year. You can't seriously say Costa or Kosier last year were better, can you? If Holland had the year he had last year, he would be a cheap solid starter. The 16th best guard in the NFL is pretty damn good

Well, that's comforting.

actually it is comforting...he is the O line coach....and what he sees, and his opinion of the player is important...your opinions... not so much

I think durability has to figure into it.

Holland has had two opportunities to finish out seasons as the starter and has had his season ended by injuries both times.

I don't think the team trusts him.

And then there was the whole half-hearted effort Hollard gave last offseason in preparation for the 2011 season.

Yeah, he's the OL coach. He's not a GM. He doesn't head personnel.

Now I'm operating on speedkilz' theory that Livings was signed strictly on his recommendation. Which I highly doubt.

i careless who plays aslong as they can knock a grown man down and lay on top of him allowing murray to spring off long runs

yea, unless he gets random fans endorsements who don't make their living coaching or evaluating talent, he must suck.

got it.

I doubt that Callahan's opinion on Livings wasn't sought. I also doubt they would have signed Livings without the OL coach and offensive coordinator saying he liked the pickup. Just like I doubt Livings would have been signed without Garrett's blessing.

BTW, I'm with you on getting the OL fixed once and for all, and agree with many of your opinions. Just not this one.

Yeah Holland is gone cause of his off the field stuff, not his performance on the field since he was the most solid OL we had on the interior last year.

Holland was an up and down work ethic was getting older and was injury prone. Thats why I am guessing they went another way. Livings shows up 16 games every season and that counts for something.

Whether or not hes any good when he is on the field i guess we will have to wait and see. Hes been playing a lot more man and now hes going to be playing a lot more zone. TBH, he seems less suited for zone but I don't deign to know enough about line play to make that conclusion especially when I have never seen the guy play.

You don't agree with my opinion that Callahan was not the determining factor on signing these offensive linemen? Because that's what I'm saying.

I'm trying to give the team credit. If our OL coach is deciding FA pickups, we are worse off than I thought.

yea, cause an OL coach should never have input on an OL player.

that's just silly stupid.

I don't agree that Callahan wasn't a big part of why they brought in Bernadeau and Livings. I think he was.

You seemed to be hinting that the two OL were brought in despite what Callahan thought. If you aren't saying that, then I guess we are in agreement.

I recommend watching some game footage of Livings and comparing it to footage of Holland.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much is video at 60 frame/second worth?

I appreciate that PFF is trying to grade players, but giving an absolute number to an OLineman is very difficult. They are very dependent on other OLinemen, effectiveness of the scheme, their fit in the scheme, how long the QB holds on to the ball, etc..

From what I saw in game footage, Livings was as good or better than Holland in 2011.
