Why not Brandon Spikes?

I would prefer RoMc, but Brandon Spikes is another thumper who is great against the run. I would imagine fairly cheap, and has no off the field issues. I think if both are healthy Ro is the better player, but Spikes would be a nice plan B if they don't trust Ro

Possibly, though I don't know much about him.
We have signed 3 LBers so far, plus getting Lee back Could be a sign of preparing if Ro is not back. Which is starting to look more like he won't be back.

This defense requires a LB that can effectively play a deep zone. MLB is very much a coverage position in this scheme. McClain got his press near the LOS, but he is a fit in this scheme because he has the athletic ability to thrive in against the pass.

Spikes is not a scheme fit because he is a pure downhill player. He might be ok at SAM. But he is the exact opposite of what a Tampa 2 MLB is

I think they've made their decisions at LB in case Ro doesn't resign or gets hurt or whatever if they do resign him.

We can get Kendricks in the draft who is younger and more athletic two-down linebacker. Why pay Spikes?

Could DE, DT, CB, RB, and S mean something?

your exactly right. What really makes McClain special is his athletic ability to drop in coverage and thump the RB.

I saw Spikes on the NFLNW tonight.
He'd be a great addition for the right price.
But, although he can play 3 downs, he did only play two in Buffalo.
We pull a LB most the time in passing situations though.
