Why Not Darren Sharper, FS of the Saints?

Why Not Darren Sharper, FS of the Saints? He's older, yes. (32?) but he knows the game and how to direct a secondary. He's also an INT machine - a playmaker - that Dallas' secondary sorely needs.

Bring in Elam and Sharper and have them play the 2 S spots. Let AOA learn behind them.

Instant leadership in the secondary along with experience in Rob ryan's scheme.

I certainly wouldn't mind bringing him in on a one or two year deal. At this point, I just want two safeties signed ASAP. As long as we bring in two of the following in no particular order, I'm satisfied.

FS - Sharper, Pool, Goldson
SS - Sensabaugh, Elam, Whitner

Sharper is like 35, but yes, we should have signed him after the 04 season when he left the Packers and went to the Vikings. I wanted him then, and honestly again when he left there to go to New Orleans. Had we signed him at age 28 or 29 or whatever he was when he left GB we'd have been set at that spot this entire time.

Dito!!! I wanted him back then also. I truly am not understanding why and what the hell this team is doing not only in the FS/SS spot in free agency but free agency in general. This position has been a position of concern for some time now even when Ken Hamlin was back there. :bang2:

He's a little too long in the tooth at this point. I wanted to sign him as a stop-gap last year because there was literally nothing out there, but I'm kind of hoping that we have Elam/Sensabaugh, or seriously go with Elam/AOA at this point. Bring Church along a little bit more and have him play in some dime packages and get him ready to start.

I refuse to give up on Barry Church! He's a great guy and not afraid to hit. He just needs to get a little bit faster. Unfortunately he didn't have a lot of time to work with Coach Woicik this off-season...same with Costa and Sam Young. But I firmly believe in 2012 we'll have teams trying to give us mid-round picks for some of our deep depth chart guys. We're going to be loaded.

I wanted not only Sharper, but also Charles Woodson when the Raiders released him.

We would've had a secondary consisting of Newman, Woodson, and Sharper with basically whoever the hell at the SS spot.

This. When Green Bay released Sharper I wanted him bad. I wanted Charles Woodson when he was a free agent in 2006 -- basically nobody wanted him in the league at that point. Would have quite the pair.

The Packers have had quite the line of safeties -- Leroy Butler in the 90s, Sharper in 2000s (well, drafted in 1999), and Nick Collins in the 2000s. Basically a 20 year continuous string of Pro-Bowl/All-Pro caliber safeties.

He’s determined to start, earn a job, and has kept himself in great shape. He’s an eventual hall of fame hopeful, and I like putting my money on those guys, for their play and leadership.

Sharper had 12 INTs in 2009, and was injured last season, but he’s fully recovered now. The Saints are not re-signing him because they found his young replacement last year - who credits Sharper for his development by the way. What differentiates the Saints from Dallas is that they had a young replacement groomed and ready to step up.

That’s what Dallas does not have, which is why taking on Sharper for a year or 2, to start this year and maybe add some depth next year, makes sense while we groom AOA and any S we may draft next year. Sharper helped groom his replacement in New Orleans, why not have him do the same for Dallas since we’re so green at the position?

Right now Dallas has no starting safeties signed. Sensabeaug is still a free agent and Allan Ball has rightly moved back to nickel CB.

Dallas supposeldly is looking to sign Abram Elam. He's a bit younger (26?) and has experience in Ryan's scheme. So sign him to one safety spot for a 3-4 year deal. That would take care of one safety spot for severla years.

But do we re-sign Sensy to the other spot? We have to sign someone, and if we do it will be as a 1-2 year stop-gap measure anywey. So in that case, why not sign Sharper for that role?

I could live with a safety backfield that features Elam and Sharper, with AOA and Church backing them up. Then target safety early in next year's draft, but at least we'd be set up this year and maybe next at both safety spots.
