Hire him as OL coach/Asst. Head Coach and groom him to take over for BP... rumor is he has only stayed at Iowa to see his son graduate which happened this year- he coached OL in the pros before with Bill Jr in Cleveland so he is from the BP lineage. I would have to think he would jump if told he would take over in 2 years.

Not only that, but if he made the jump it wouldn't be for an assistant's job.

Iowa, not Iowa State.

I heard him on the Dan Patrick show today...

He said that he will stay at Iowa and that at this point he has no desire to return to the NFL...

Translation...he wanted the Green Bay job.

:hammer: He'll want the head coaching job and nothing less.

And if Parcells doesn't seriously upgrade this team, being that we are behind, IMHO, the Giants and Skins, then we will need to seriously look at a good, hard-nosed coach that isn't so bull headed.

Why be a flunky OL coach in the NFL when you can be a head coach in college with the admiration of an entire state? Believe me, Iowans love Ferentz.

Not to mention the fact that if he wanted a NFL head coaching job, he could probably get one pretty easy.

I've also heard rumblings that he'd like to go to Penn State when JoePa hangs it up.

"I don't think Iowa is the type of place where I'll get fired if I only win 9 games."

Cuz BP doesn't want a "name" guy coming here. Payton wasn't a "name" guy, he was a Giant reject. Zimmer he inherited and all the rest of the guys are no-namers as well.

That's the way he likes it.

Besides Ferentz has been saying for awhile that he was happy at Iowa.

Hmm, take an assistant job when you are a head coach somewhere else. yeah, that'll happen.

I'm curious why people are so hot on ANY college coach? Can anyone name me a college coach, other than Jimmy Johnson, who has been successful in the NFL? I'm serious--& this has nothing to do with whether I like Parcells or not. I have yet to see any college coach have success in the NFL. Davis, Erickson, Spurrier--all "hot" college coaches who failed, & the list goes further back. Yes, Saban has a good start, but let's see what happens with him. Maybe he'll prove another exception to the rule.

That's why JoePa resisted overtures to go to the NFL (& I speak as a State College/Penn State native whose father taught at Penn State & siblings went to school with JoePa's kids). Success in college rarely translates to success in the NFL, for some reason.

Actually... they said GB made the decision on McCarthy 5 minutes AFTER Ferentz said he wasn't interested...

You are right in your assumption... but a few have done ok...

Bill Parcells for one... he was a college coach and HC for Air Force before going to the Jints...
Don Shula was an assistant at UK...
Hank Stram was an assistant at Purdue...
Joe Gibbs had numerous college stints...
John Madden SDSU
Bill Walsh went from a HS Coach to the pros, as did Dick Vermeil...

Just a few I know of, but I see your point...

I'll grant you on those--but they all (or most) worked as assistants in the NFL first. Most had no expectations of becoming head coaches, but learned their trade first. Even Saban worked as an assistant under Belichick at one point.
I guess I was thinking of the college coaches who make the jump immediately to HC of an NFL team--or people who think magically that a college HC will make a good pro HC without going thru an assistant apprenticeship, same as other coaches. And then additionally, the ones who do (like Davis & now Saban) demand full personnel decisions or GM duties or such, which further adds to their learning curve.

Well... that's what I figured that you meant but I wasn't sure...

Tom Coughlin, Ron Meyer, Bobby Ross, Barry Switzer, Chuck Fairbanks, Lou Saban, Sid Gillman, Bud Grant...

You guys are getting a little crazy with the coaches your talking about. Why would one of the top coaches in the college game leave to be an assistant?? Please atleast make realistic options...
