Why not rotate Smith and Peters

That way you get both of them ready without putting too much on either’s plate. Tyler can keep learning from Peters all season. And when it’s crunch time you can go with the better option.

They’ve done this before with Steele and a veteran. I see Smith being a better run blocker than Peters right out of the gates, while learning the ropes blocking these edge players.

I was thinking about this today especially with Peters comments about being okay to sit and help Smith out. If Smith struggles we could see Peters start and as Smith corrects things we may see them split time until he is ready, assuming Smith improves in practice week to week.

Because rotating OL is stupid?

Yeah, I remember Tom Landry rotating quarterbacks every play....didn't work out too well either

I like the idea!

I believe he did that to ease Staubach back in to football shape after serving in the Navy.

No, Landry couldn't decide who should be the starter against the bears and this was before the headsets came into play. Landry used to rotate Guards in with the play calls, so he thought why not do it with Quarterbacks.....didn't work against the bears so he went with Stauback after the game

I'm hoping Smith does well enough at tackle that Peters can slide in at guard next to him. Wouldn't hurt Baidasz to have Peters on one side and Martin on the other, either.

You can do better than that. I don’t believe it is from the long term perspective. We’ve basically done this with Tyron over the last few years. Just without the benefit of developing a young, blue chip prospect.

Makes sense. I was young(ish) and probably didn't grasp the reasoning. Landry was a visionary, even if that move didn't work out so well. I do remember the guards bringing in plays too

More than any other position group the OL succeeds and fails as a group. They work in tandem, unison and it either all works or it fails. One missed block does. Compare this to all other positions when if two fail and one succeeds you can still succeed. Peters hasn't played or doesn't play on the inside. Plus the footwork, assignets and blocking techniques for each position is different. So continuity on the OL is key.

Switching back and forth is not good for either. OL is not plug and play like RB or any other.position.

On the interior especially. Rotating at just one spot on the edge is not as disruptive.
Depends on how much the help the edge needs, which also switches the OC.
And I bet they're going to go out big tip conserv the first few games, giving Smith tons of chip help and heavy sets his way.

He was using TE's to bring in the plays before the experiment with Staubach and Morton.
